ALMA ELIZABETH ANDREWS

1919 - 2016

ANDREWS, Alma Elizabeth (Stone) Devoted Teacher Of West Harwich, formerly of Waltham and Wayland, MA, passed away on December 26, 2016. Born in Winthrop, MA to parents Alma E.M. (Graham) Stone and J. Henry Stone she was educated through the Winthrop Public Schools. Upon graduating from high school, Alma furthered her education by attending Wheelock College in Boston for Elementary Education and also graduated from Boston University with a Bachelor's Degree in Education. Alma began her teaching career in Winthrop, developing curriculum and teaching private Kindergarten. She continued her passion for teaching another 25 years through the Weston Elementary Public Schools and was a team leader for five kindergarten teachers, 7 years with the Barnstable Public Schools and Osterville Elementary where she earned Teacher of the Year in 1971. She was also involved as a cooperating teacher with students from Wheelock, Boston University, Elliot Person, and Harvard University. She was a passionate member of the Barnstable Teachers Assoc., Mass. Teachers Assoc., the Wheelock College Alumni Assoc., and Christ Church Episcopal in Harwich Port. After retirement, Alma enjoyed winters in Stuart, FL for 15 years, was an avid golfer, gardener, a sailing enthusiast, a lover of music and a talented organist and pianist. She was always devoted to a life of teaching and held a strong love for her children. Alma was the loving wife of the late Harold F. Andrews and leaves behind sisters-in-law Ruth Durkin of E. Falmouth and Lillian Andrews of Canton and her brother-in-law Richard Andrews of Sudbury as well as many nephews, nieces, and grand nephews and nieces.

Visitation will be held at Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home, 260 Main St. (Rt. 28), W. HARWICH, on Tues., Jan. 3, 2017 from 11:30-12 Noon, followed by a funeral service at 12 Noon and a committal service concluding at Island Pond Cemetery, Harwich Port.
