My Uncle Bernie, to me, was the guiding light and moral compass of my family. I always loved his quiet manner of guiding, never pushing, but so effectively getting his point across. Thoughtful and kind are the two words that come to mind.
As a young man with a family, we talked. He had always regretted not being as available as he wanted to be with his family. He had said that it was always sad to have to decline some family event or another but he said it was worse when nobody even invited him to give him the chance to decline. That was when he knew that he had to change and be more available. As a young busy father, those words meant a lot to me.
He was the only man that I ever knew who always wore a necktie on Sunday. Not sure why he did that, but that certainly showed his proper bearing and mettle.
I don't think that I have ever known a kinder man who achieved so much and yet was so modest about his accomplishments. At the time i didn't really know anybody that went to an Ivy league school, particularly right after World War II. It was said that he graduated at the top of his class but he would never acknowledge that to me. He owned five bakeries that baked hamburger rolls for Burger King and McDonald's...how do you bake for two competitors? He did it and did it well. It seemed complicated to me when he was also baking Thomas's English Muffins. He said, it was really just following a recipe. He had that knack for making things simple and minimizing his accomplishments. He didn't just bake for McDonald's and Burger King but his five bakeries covered the eastern seaboard. By the way, it took years for me to find this out since he seldom shared his accomplishments.
He was my mother's favorite brother and he was my favorite uncle. So, to my favorite uncle of few words and few visits, you have had a lasting impact on me and I will miss you!
Auntie Bobbi, I miss you and know that this period must be so difficult for you. You have always been so full of love and generosity, I hope this period of sadness morphs into something happier for you. I know that your sadness will ease over time. I love you.

Dear Bobbie: I'm deeply saddened to hear about Dad's passing. Meeting you and your lovely husband is among my fondest memories from Boston. I'm truly honored to have known Bernard; a wonderful man and a model husband and father. May God give you and your family the strength to cope with your loss.

Sending my love and condolences and wishing all of the Cole family comfort today. You are a wonderful family with a special place in my heart, and Bernard (or Mr. Cole or Kermit's dad, as I called him as a high school girl) was always very kind to me. May good memories of a life well lived bring you peace.

As President of Kasanof's Bakery Bernie and his brother Lenny were always a treat to work with. I deeply appreciated the kindness shown to me as a vendor, an equal partner...May his memory be for a blessing...David Riseman

Our deepest sympathies to the Cole family from Irma Stern and Bradley Stern. When I asked my mom about Bernie..she said he was a wonderful man who never said a bad word about anyone or anything. Whenevef I saw Bernie at the office he always had a smile and asked about my mom and dad. Truly a man of integrity and class.
Sincerely,
Brad
