DANIEL BURKE Obituary

BURKE, Daniel "Dan" Richard Of Dorchester, passed away on April 5, 2024. Dan was born in Boston on January 27, 1942, the proud son of the late Laurence G. and Mary F. (Murray) Burke. Dear brother of Thomas J. Burke Sr. and his wife, Mary. Loving partner of many years to Catherine Memory, who he fondly referred to as "Lady Catherine". Dan was predeceased by his brother, Laurence G. Burke, Jr. and his wife, Connie; and his sister-in-law, Judy Burke. Supportive and caring uncle to Laurence G. Burke, III and his wife, Marie, Catherine Lemansky, Kevin Burke and his wife, Cheryl; goddaughter, Mary Beth Neville and her husband, Shaun, Thomas J. Burke, Jr. and the late Theresa Burke. Also survived by many grand and great-nieces and nephews, godchildren, extended family, and friends. Dan was raised in Dorchester, where he was a fixture in the community from a very early age, as President and coach of Dorchester Pop Warner football, baseball coach, YMCA Board Member, Member of the Neponset Civic Association and Pope's Hill Neighborhood Association and many other local community organizations. Throughout his life, he was a devout Catholic, primarily attending St. Ann's Parish, Dorchester. His desire to make Dorchester and Boston a better community for all led him to be active in local politics, including the Ward 16 Democratic Committee and Democratic City Committee. He served as an elected member of the Boston School Committee for many years, including as President. Dan received his Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Boston State College, now University of Massachusetts, Boston, in 1966. He then started his teaching career at Christopher Columbus High School, as a math teacher and department chair, Director of Admissions, Director of Athletics, football coach and baseball coach. In 1972, he moved to Catholic Memorial High School, where for over twenty years he served as math teacher, guidance counselor, Director of Development, football coach and advisor to many student organizations. While at Catholic Memorial, he continued his advanced studies, receiving his Master of Education in Counselor Education from Suffolk University in 1975 and his Doctorate in Education from Boston College in 1992. He then began the next phase of his career, first as Principal at Wareham High School in 1992 and then, Scituate High School in 1997. During his tenure, he engaged with students, faculty, staff and parents, using his energy to implement high expectations. He embraced the school community in each town, staying late for meetings, student clubs, sporting events and performances, often not returning to Dorchester until 10 pm or later. He was selected as Principal for Melrose High School in 1999, where he served for almost eight years. He became active in the school and local community, including as a member of the Melrose Rotary Club, where he served as President in 2015-2016. Not one to remain still for long, after retiring as a high school principal, he continued to make a difference in the lives of students and their families, teaching at-risk students at the Chelsea Alternative High School, as well as many first-generation college students and new U.S. citizens at Cambridge College and Bunker Hill Community College. Across all these roles, his life was marked by the many students he helped, as a teacher, coach and mentor, which he did with a mix of tough love, tremendous compassion, a listening ear and a strong belief in their ability to achieve beyond their dreams. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend visiting hours at the John J. O'Connor & Son Funeral Home, 740 Adams St. (near Gallivan Blvd.), DORCHESTER, on Friday, April 12, 2024, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Ann's Church, Neponset, on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at 9:30 a.m. Interment in St. Joseph Cemetery, West Roxbury. My condolences to the Burke family. I was one of his Pop Warner football players for two years when he coached the Queensmen. He was a fantastic coach, a tough but sensitive man who made a real investment in his players. He drilled us hard but in the two years we never lost a game and we were in such good shape we very rarely had an injury. Over the years I frequently thought about Dan and how much of an impact he had on my life.

My first encounter with Mr. Burke was at St. Gregory´s in Dorchester grade 7.He told us to meet one Saturday at the Murphy School. When I showed up he said we are going to run 3 miles from the Murphy to Houghton´s Pond. I measured that course later in my running career and son of a gun it was 6 miles. I was third that day and realized I had an ability running because of Dan Burke. I ran through high school and college due to his efforts with the youth in Dorchester. Thank you!!!

Dan was my high school math teacher, mentor and friend. Also, Dan was my supervisor in 1977 for a memorable parks and recreation summer job. Dan and I went with 4 others on a trip to Europe in 1990-I was Dan´s roommate for the 3 week trip. Lots of great memories. Rest in peace Dan-in my prayers-Al Totten

Mr. Burke had a significant impact on me as my guidance counselor at CM in 1988 through 1990. I needed a little of that tough love and he knew how to balance it. I wondered what he did after CM. What an an an incredible man. RIP Mr. Burke.

I'm so sorry to learn of Dan's passing. We grew up together in St. Ann's Parish, although Dan was a few years older than me. Dan and I both signed up to run in the first district elected Boston School Committee election in 1983. Fortunately, for me, I never had to run against Dan, choosing to seek a City-wide seat instead. Dan, I hope to catch up with you at St. Joseph's a lot of years from now, and see you upstairs for the 'long-term'. Meanwhile, prayers and good thoughts for you and your family.

It is with sadness that I hear of the passing of Mr. Dan Burke. He was my math teacher in grade 9 and left an indelible impression on many of us boys. Despite his harsh manner, he helped me realize very young that hard work, precision and selflessness were important to becoming a good Christian man. He would go out of his way to help you on a personal level. He would take me out for a pizza to talk to me about my ambitions and even got me a date for my junior prom when he heard that I might not be going. He is a person who challenged me to be more brave than I thought possible. Even though I lost touch with Dan after high school, I will always remember him as a man who cared about me. Please share with his family my most heartfelt condolences. He will not be forgotten

Was principal of Scituate high when my son was there years ago. Loved his creative consequences for bad behavior that skipped the suspension and involved cleaning the senior center on weekend mornings.
Also, he went above and beyond in the caring about teens department.
I wish there were more like him.
