DANIEL SCHEIRER Obituary

SCHEIRER, Daniel Charles 68, fell asleep in the Lord Friday, July 24, 2015. Dan was born December 10, 1946 in Lebanon, PA to parents, Robert L. Scheirer and Christine A. Smith. He attended Wheaton College, Illinois, and was awarded his masters and doctoral degrees from Pennsylvania State University. For thirty-three dedicated years Dan taught as Professor of Biology at Northeastern University in Boston, where he also directed the school's electron microscopy lab and prehealth advising. In 2007 he accepted an appointment at Duke University, where he served as Associate Dean of Natural Sciences, Trinity College, Chief Prehealth Advisor, and Director of the Office of Health Professions Advising. Dan's life is distinguished by a profound and tireless dedication to his students. He was a visionary in applying technology to education, having most recently created an advising platform that empowers the prehealth community of students and advisors. Dan is survived by his beloved wife, Lois Ruth Scheirer, his sons, Daniel Charles Scheirer II and Christopher Robert John Scheirer, and daughter-in-law, Sabrina Scheirer; his brother, Robert Smith Scheirer and his sister-in-law, Sharon Scheirer. A service of witness to the resurrection will be held Thursday, July 30, at 1:00 p.m., from the Church of the Holy Family, Chapel Hill, with the Rev. Clarke French and the Rev. Sarah Ball-Damberg officiating. A reception will be held after the service at the Washington Duke Inn, Durham, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Dan will be laid to rest on Saturday, August 1, at 11:00 a.m., in Elizabethtown Mennonite Cemetery, Elizabethtown, PA, after which a reception will be held at Susquehanna Room, Myer Building, Elizabethtown College. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Dan's memory to the Office of Academic Deans, Trinity College of Arts and Sciences, Duke University, which will be dedicated to providing educational funding for students in need. Many of us at Northeastern University just learned of Dan's passing and are quite saddened. He was a kind, thoughtful and generous colleague, for which I was especially appreciative when I arrived in the Department of Biology as a junior faculty member. I feel I can speak for all my NU colleagues in saying that he will be fondly remembered.

A wise individual once said, "Some people believe that money and material possessions are the true measure of a man's life. The true measure of a man is his character, who he was loved by, who was loved by him, and the mark he leaves on the world. The true measure of a man's character is not what others see him do, but what he does and how he lives his life when no one is watching." This quote defines the life and the impact Dan had on his students and on me. He will remain on my mind and in my heart, always.

Dean Scheirer was a loving, compassionate and caring pre-health advisor that helped me and dozens of other undergraduate students think through their dreams and aspirations in life and medicine. I will forever remember his wise words of comfort during some of my most difficult times at Duke.

One of the great leaders in the Duke community, every pre-med student I knew wanted Dean Scheirer as their advisor! He will be missed, he has helped so many students through trying times, helping them realize their full potential. Always being a positive and realistic source of guidance, he was the best. He worked so hard to help so many students achieve their goals and reach their dreams! What a gift he was.

As the first person in my family to navigate the medical field, I was so fortunate to have Dean Scheirer's expertise and support as I navigated this completely unfamiliar territory. Through his time at Duke, he helped so many students ultimately reach their dreams of attending medical school, and in the process, he will have indirectly touched the lives of countless many patients and families. My condolences to the family in this trying time.

Dr. Scheirer was my pre-health advisor when I was at Duke. He was always kind, patient and encouraging of all my academic and professional pursuits. I am headed to medical school in the fall and this accomplishment is thanks in no small part to the support and guidance of Dean Scheirer. My sincerest condolences go out to his family. He will be missed by the entire Duke community.

I was fortunate to have Dean Scheirer as one of my premed advisors during my time at Duke, and I was very saddened to hear the news of his passing. Whenever I met with him in person or talked to him over the phone for advising, he was always positive, patient, thoughtful, and empathetic. Despite my struggles in some of my Duke premed courses, he encouraged me to not let a few mediocre grades hold me back from applying to medical school. I recently was admitted to medical school, and his advice and encouragement was instrumental in not only helping me reach my goal, but also enabling hundreds of premed students at Duke to reach their aspirations. I hope the Scheirer family can find peace and strength knowing that Dean Scheirer positively impacted the lives of hundreds of students at Duke, including myself.
