Dave! My canyon buddy, what happened? I just purchased another copy of Short Hops from kindle and tried to contact you. Our last conversation was short but sweet. We tried to hook up on one of my layovers in the Boston area but as fate would have it, I got called out to fly gain and we never connected. I have a tear in my eye and a saddened heart discovering this news of your passing. And yet I have a smile on my face as well. I had so much fun with you flying over the Grand Canyon all those years ago. Your professional demenor and that charming smile of yours will forever be etched in my mind. Yahoo Copter Two Dave! Rest in peace my friend, I will miss you!

It is so nice to see that David never lost his charm and adventure.. I met David when I was 14 years old.. and he made an indelible affect on my entire life.. I went with him to his Senior Prom at Newton High School..I was a drum majorette and he played the trombone in the marching band. I marched directly in front of him...We went "steady" in High School.. until he went to St. Olaf College. (I was 2 years his junior) We kept in touch with each other for years following.. He was and always will be a very special part of my life..
Many years later I saw him again when he came to my Mom's Funeral. . and he hadn't changed at all. still delightful, charming, and handsome.. David... you took a piece of my heart with you..to heaven.

My friendship with David originated in the Fall of 1955 in Steensland Hall during daily rehearsals with the St. Olaf Choir. It was then and there that I became aware of his beautiful lyric tenor voice, a golden voice that not only qualified him for membership in the varsity choir but also assured his eminent position in the Greater Brotherhood of Fubar. We needed that brilliant sonority in the upper range to provide harmonic balance for our unique repertoire of Fubar songs. Hence, David assumed the name of Cricket and became one of us. Cricket had a buoyant personality. His hearty laughter was as distinctive as his singing voice, so it was always a pleasure to be in his company. We had the good fortune to journey together on three month-long regional choir tours: east, west, and south, topped off with a bonus trip during spring break of our senior year when the federal government via military air transport flew us to Iceland where we sang for the American troops in Keflavik and at the national cathedral in Reykjavik. During one of our alumni class reunions, Cricket gave a recital in the new music hall on Manitou Heights. I'll never forget the thrill of sitting front and center with our distinguished choir director, Olaf Christiansen, and primo basso Lars (Argo) Kindem while hearing the Cricket soar into Donizetti's “Una furtiva lagrima.” Of course, Cricket soared as a flyboy too, as a jet pilot in the Air Force and as a civilian helicopter pilot over the Grand Canyon. He captured some of these flying experiences in a collection he entitled Short Hops. What an amazingly flexible and diversified talent! Cricket was equally impressive in delivering the opening recitative and aria from Handel's Messiah (“Comfort ye” and “Every valley shall be exalted”) as he was in winging it with “The Little Bird” and “Uncle George and Auntie Mabel” from the fabulous Fubar repertoire. In song and spirit, he transcended his courageous physical struggles by flying high!

David, you were our Cricket:
Legacies of theater and everlasting song,
Ring loud and clear at your time,
You lived boldly, danced gracefully through life,
The sparkle and music of your "Olaf" roots survive,
Your heart and legacy of a “Popstand” soul reside,
Deeply felt laughter and ever-bouncing ways remain,
Flying too, we love you dearly now and ever,
Never ever forgotten, always well-sustained.
Argo, Rawhide, Gus, Stud, HozKnoz, the Dog, Cricket, Scuba too – and ever-sculpted Maximus --
(Hobo not forgotten, marked forever there in Northfield)--
his son:
And from this day, to the ending of the world say we May they all in their flowing cups, be freshly remembered,
Raging against the dying of the light,
"So--this story shall the good man teach this:
We few, we happy few, we Band of Brothers,
Say we this, to all of you –
(Though our valiant armor of scarred hopes be somewhat worn):
Think when man's glory most begins and ends;
And say our glory was that we had such friends."

Fubar Tributes to “Cricket”

About five years ago Cricket invited me to go with him to Florida - to touch base with his old friends there, and sing in a church choir. Seems he had a friend who, like Cricket, loved singing and flying - this was an old barnstormer who used to do tricks at airshows. Well, it was an adventure, including some of the best keylime pie I ever had, hearing old air force blarney, and singing in this small church choir - altogether memorable. Cricket invited me several times after to join him in singing expeditions - there at Boston, a tour of eastern Europe - but it never worked out. Fortunately, he did send me some recordings - of his final concert at music school, and of some of the choirs he sang in. He was altogether unique. So typical that he was singing up till the last. Aye, lads, we will miss the Cricket, there was only one.
Blessings!
Scuba

We learned only yesterday, worries forewarned -
Cricket passed away in March, five in one year,
For whom our bells toll, all due to cancer.
But what we know for sure is this:
Of the greatest Fubar stunts ever:
After the dredges of his NY Tombs,
Cricket flew Hobo to The Pentagon,
Army Helicopter Express, no less,
Gassed up, called Hoz at Pentagon HQ,
Offloaded Hobo's bike, portable canoe, camping gear,
And Hobo himself to the nearby Riverhouse,
And Cricket's lovely daughters
To the nation's capital too,
Where we celebrated meaning,
And life, so well now remembered,
As Fubar bells sadly toll, again,
To the news of Cricket,
And for Argo, we will toast
The Last Fubar Standing,
Whom-so-ere he might ever be,
Notwithstanding all so well-named.
HozKnoz

To all who knew and loved David Jarratt, our “Cricket”:
He was a mountain of a man with tremendous talent, and I respected him for his use of his great gifts. There is much I didn't know in our brief history together, but he made St. Olaf proud for his achievements in so many areas. I am sorry to say goodbye this way and offer prayers of sympathy for his family. With warm wishes for your cherished memories...mac - Mac Gimse, Professor Emeritus of Art, St. Olaf College

It stunned me to learn of David's death. I,too, knew him better after graduating from ST. Olaf. On his trips to South Dakota to participate in a large family reunion he stayed with me two nights. I now remember he and I talking for hours after dinner. David was a very sensitive man who easily cried once on this trip. He told me he was very sensitive. Damn, I liked that man!!!! He did Fubar proud.
Gunder

Dave was a good soul and a true gentleman whom I actually got to know better after St. Olaf. Despite his many setbacks, he was always upbeat and optimistic whenever I talked with him. He was a special friend for both Jo and me. Our ranks are thinning--may we all appreciate what we have while we have it.

I was so sorry to see David's obituary. He was a very old friend from grade school in Delaware, Ohio. He left Delaware in the 8th grade and I only recently found out about the extraordinary life that he had. His sister Karen was in my sister Judy's class in grade school and his mother Ingeborg was our music teacher. I know he had a wonderful family and they will all miss their dad, brother and grandpa. My very deepest sympathy to all of his family and friends.

My sympathy goes to the family and friends of David Jarratt. May your heart be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you remember the life they lived. Remember that there will be a time when sickness and death will be no more.
