EDWARD DOHERTY Obituary

DOHERTY, Edward B., DDS Of Reading. The world lost a loving, caring and passionate person on Thursday morning September 4, 2014, when the energetic life of Dr. Edward B. Doherty came to an untimely end. At the ripe age of 81, Ed died, as he lived all of his waking moments, in the company of his wife and soul mate of 56 years, Phyllis M. (Zacarria) Doherty. Born in Stoneham, MA in 1933, Edward attended St. Patrick's Elementary School in Stoneham and St. John's Prep in Danvers before graduating from Saint Anselm College in Manchester, NH. He received his Doctorate in Dental Surgery from Loyola University School of Dentistry in Chicago, IL in 1958, where he was a member of Xi Psi Dental Fraternity, the editor of the Psi Phi Quarterly and St. Appolonia Guild prior to establishing a thriving dental practice for the next 42 years in Reading. A former member of the United States Naval Reserves, he was also a member of the Massachusetts Dental Society, the American Dental Association and the Reading Council of the Knights of Columbus. After retiring, Ed and Phyllis split their time between residences in Reading and Gilford, NH, but it was time spent in Aruba that provided Ed the greatest enjoyment. As the unofficial ambassador to Aruba, "Uncle Ed" could be found meeting and greeting visitors on the beautiful beaches, striking up conversation with strangers and sharing "a joke or two". Ed loved people, and people loved Ed. He will be so deeply missed by so many, in so many places. Edward, the son of William C. and Elizabeth C. (Byrne) Doherty of Stoneham, was the last surviving member of the Doherty family, and the youngest brother of Mary Cassidy, Elizabeth Doherty, Rita DiSalvo, William, John and Joseph Doherty. He was the father of Edward Jude Doherty of Dublin, Ireland, Brian T. Doherty & his wife Jennifer of Seattle, WA, Elizabeth Gravel & her husband Paul of Manchester, NH, Patricia Hughes & her husband Richard of Stratham, NH and Margaret Kelley & her husband Keith of Canterbury, NH. He was the proud grandfather of Siobhan, Liam, Kane, Gillian, Hailey, Alex, Sophia, Lydia, Emma, Fiona, Brendan and Eamon and great grandfather of Nancy. Also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral from the Anderson-Bryant Funeral Home, 4 Common St., STONEHAM, Monday at 9 A.M., followed by a Funeral Mass at 10 A.M. in St. Patrick Church, 71 Central St., Stoneham. Visitation at the funeral home Sunday, 1-3 and 5-7 P.M. Memorial gifts may be made to Youville Hospital Spaulding Rehab., Lahey Clinic or the V.N.A. of Middlesex East.
