EDWARD KELLOGG Obituary

KELLOGG, Edward B. Edward Blagden Kellogg, known as Ned, died at his home in Cambridge, MA, on Friday, 30 August 2024. He was eighty years of age. Born in Boston, Ned lived his entire life in Cambridge, where he had grown up. Ned was the third of five children of the Rev. Frederic B. Kellogg and Sarita B. Choate. He attended Shady Hill School, Groton and Harvard College, where he majored in history and literature. He graduated Cum Laude in 1966 and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Later, Ned received an MBA from Northeastern University, traveling on the subway at night over a 6-year period. Ned was born legally blind but that didn't inhibit him from having a successful career in computer programming and systems analysis in the Harvard Alumni Affairs and Development Office for many years. He also had perfect pitch. He could tell the speed of a car from the tone winter tires made on a dry road. He would tell his father that he was driving too fast. Ned was a linguist. He read and spoke a number of languages: French, German, Russian, Arabic and Chinese, among others. He could also read Latin and Greek. Ned maintained a lifelong relationship with music. He played the piano and organ. After college, he studied with pianist and teacher Nadia Boulanger at Fontainebleau in France. He also composed music for, among other things, his class reunion's memorial services, for the Rev. Peter J. Gomes, Harvard's Memorial Church's Pusey Minister, for the Harvard University Choir, and for his own enjoyment. He traveled around the U.S. and abroad to hear opera and early music performances. He was a strong supporter of several local musical organizations. Episcopal by baptism, Ned attended Morning Prayers at Harvard's Memorial Church and services at the Friends Meeting for many years. In later life, he was devoted to the monastic community, the Society of Saint John, SSJE. Ned is survived by his longtime partner Nonna Katz; his four siblings: Miriam K. Truslow, Frederic R. Kellogg (Molly S. Kellogg), Sarah J. Kellogg and Cornelia H. Kellogg (Dale Brunsvold). He was uncle to five nephews and a niece: William A. Truslow, III, Hugh K. Truslow (Erika Riddington), Samuel B. Truslow (Kate Reeder), Maja, Jacob and Yves Kellogg; and great-uncle to: Olivia T. Pappacena, John W. Truslow, Annika C. Truslow, Magnus K. Truslow, Susanna K. Burr, Charles H. Truslow, Hope W. Truslow, Karla and Mira Kellogg. Burial will be private. Contributions in Ned's name may be made to the Boston Early Music Festival (bemf.org).

The photograph of "Neddy" chosen for this obituary is wonderful!

I always admired Neddy ,and I felt sympathy for him during our Shady Hill School days, since I often felt out of step, and I imagined that he felt the same way. However, I'm quite sure that he was made of stronger stuff than I.

After those elementary years, I only stayed in touch with him in a desultory way, unfortunately, and so I did not know about his death, this last August (2024). Sometimes, but only occasionally, when I visited Cambridge, I would call him up for a quick cup of tea and a chat someplace. What a brave and brilliant man! Once he stayed as a guest of mine when he visited in Santa Fe, so I threw a dinner party for him and the group discussed Bernard Shaw's "The Adventures of the Black Girl in Her Search for God" a short novella which we all had read, and Neddy sat in the place of honor, between two beautiful women. He enjoyed the jolly give and take, and I recall that he related some of the discussion to music. (I forget the details, but he was charming and charmed!)

At first meeting, Neddy might seem to be fragile, but soon he revealed his sturdy self: searching, profound and witty -- a memorable, special person!

Hi--

I knew Ned in high school, where we were friends. Over the years, we'd find one another at the BSO and elsewhere. His jolly, affectionatge and old friend greeting alway made me feel that the world was a better place.

Ned was a consummate pun master who gracefully tolerated my feeble counter puns. Also I never met anyone with a clearer understanding of weather patterns, a great teacher.
