Enid Chapman Obituary

CHAPMAN, Enid Whyte 79, of Milton and Chatham, Massachusetts passed away at home on January 18, 2011 with her family at her side. She was the beloved wife of the late Richard Blair Chapman, MD. Born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island on June 23, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Malcolm Campbell Whyte and Dorothy Andrew Whyte. She graduated from Cumberland High School, studied at the Rhode Island School of Design, and went on to earn her RN degree from the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston. After graduation from the nursing school she went to work at the Massachusetts General Hospital where she met and married the late Richard Blair Chapman, MD. They moved to Milton in 1959 where together they raised seven children. They spent their summers in Chatham. Until her death, she remained active on Boards, volunteer political positions, health care interests, civic committees, and charitable groups. She was an active member of the First Parish Unitarian Church in Milton, on the Boards of both the Swift Martin Fund and The Boston Home in Dorchester. Additionally, she remained very active with the Milton Visiting Nurses, The Milton Library, the Milton Council of Aging, the Milton Food Pantry, the Milton Hoosic Club and the Megantic Fish and Game Corporation in Maine, while still finding the time to work at the University of Massachusetts Boston Gerentology Program where she herself also received a certification degree. Her interests included her large family, friends, gardening, gourmet cooking, needlepoint, international travel, fly fishing, global politics, and the New York Times cross word puzzle. She was a voracious life long reader and was a member of numerous book groups. She was comfortable equally at home in the Boston area; the back woods of Northern Maine with a fly rod in hand; or on a boat in Pleasant Bay in Chatham off the Cape. She lived life to fullest. Her grace, generous spirit and steadfast friendship will surely be missed. She is survived by her seven children, Richard, Kathleen, William, Anne, Edmund, Andrew, and John; three daughter-in-laws, Laurie, Diana, and Julia; one son-in-law Rob; and five grandsons, Wyatt, Dylan, Blair, Alec and Banner. She is also survived by her two brothers, Rollin and Donald Whyte. A memorial service will be held at The First Parish Church (Unitarian) in Milton, 535 Canton Ave., Milton, at 11 o'clock on Fri., Jan. 28th. Interment was private in Milton Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to The Milton Residents Fund c/o The First Parish, 535 Canton Ave, Milton, MA, 02186 or to a charity of your choice. I'm very sorry to hear about Enid's death. She was a lovely person, memorable for her good nature and warmth, intelligence and broad interests. When we were kids in Milton, she was always very welcoming at her house, and in later years she was a very faithful and supportive friend to my mother. All the Mahoneys will remember her often and fondly.

Enid was a wonderful, warm person. She and my mom were famous for their hats. She made time to visit with our family when we were in need...and, she raised some great kids! She made a difference in this world.

Hi all Chapman kids, I just heard about Enid today from my cousin Ann. I am truly sorry for your loss. I remember when we were kids and the time spent at your house (great chocolate chip cookies and hot chocolate after sledding at the Swift's hill before we had to trek down to our house) and she was a very great friend to my mother. I was fortunate to have spent time with her and Nona as an adult. Smart woman. I would love to be able to be at the service for her but being on MV makes it hard.
My thoughts are with you all.

much love, Elizabeth(Baba)Mahoney

Dearest Billy, Ricky, Katie, Annie, Ned, Andrew, and John,
Your mom was always the most gentle and caring mom and always welcomed me in for dinner or just refuge from my own busy family. She always had the most wonderful smile and genuinely caring nature. After a long winter sledding on our hill, we would cross the street to your house and she always seemed to have hot cocoa ready to thaw us out. My childhood would not have been so very special if it hadn't been for your mom and your family. My love comes to all of you at this difficult time.

Dear Ricky,Katie,Billy,Annie,Ned, Andrew and John; Please accept my heartfelt sympathy and prayers. I just now heard the news and want you to know how much I admired your beautiful mother and what an influence she had on me -- with her gentle strength, her great style and exquisite taste -- during all the years I spent babysitting you younger four! I am not sure where the time has gone but I am sure that Enid Chapman was one of the loveliest, most gracious women I have ever met. Condolences to each one of you -- and warmest hugs. I send deep love and gratitude for such meaningful memories of my coming of age with the Chapmans in Milton and in Chatham.
