ERNEST SCHURMANN

1931 - 2022

SCHURMANN, Ernest Sun City Center, FL - Ernest "Ernie" Eric Hugo Schurmann passed away peacefully November 21, 2022. Born in New York, NY, on November 29, 1931, Ernie was the son of the late Augusta and Ernst Schurmann. Ernie attended Manhattan H.S. of Aviation Trades in NYC and was the first from his school to matriculate to Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA. Ernie achieved a BS and MS in Aeronautics/Aviation/Aerospace Science and Technology at MIT. Then he and his wife, Phoebe, moved to Fort Worth, TX, in 1953 to work for General Dynamics/Convair. In 1960, they moved to Peabody, MA, so Ernie could start his career at Avco/Textron Systems. Ernest was Chief Consulting Scientist at Textron Systems when he retired. Ernie and Phoebe moved to Florida in 1994 to be near their daughter, Carol (Schurmann) Vose. They moved in Herons Glen, North Fort Myers, FL, and then moved to Freedom Plaza, Sun City, FL. Ernie was a wonderful husband, son, father, friend and workmate. People will remember him for his wit, grace, compassion, and joy of life. Ernie played golf for many years and had a great group of golf partners. He was very active in neighborhood functions at both Herons Glen and Freedom Plaza. People there fondly remember him as "Big Ern." Ernie took up designing and making silver jewelry as a hobby for many years. Ernie was predeceased by his loving and wonderful wife of 67 years, Phoebe Schurmann, whom he adored. Ernie was most proud of his children and their families. He is survived by his sons, Bruce and Gary Schurmann; and daughters, Carol Vose and Judy Ovans. He also leaves behind seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. The family wishes to thank all those who have shared their wonderful memories of Ernie and hope everyone will continue to hold him in their hearts.
