FRED BUTTERWORTH Obituary

Butterworth, Fred A. 93, of North Attleboro died September 8, 2015. He was husband of the late Elizabeth F. (Doherty). Born July 22, 1922 in Lawrence, MA, he was a son of the late Fred and Dorothy (Monahan) Butterworth. Fred grew up in Lawrence and was a 1939 graduate of Lawrence High School. He lived in Wrentham for seven years before moving to North Attleboro 52 years ago. He retired as the deputy commissioner for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Corrections in 1985. He had worked in the Department of Corrections for 36 years including many years as superintendent at the Walpole prison. He was a US Marine veteran of World War II serving at Tarawa in Pacific Theatre and was a Purple Heart recipient. He is survived by seven children: Fred T. Butterworth and wife Diane of Dartmouth, Linda A. Kallstrom of FL, Catherine D. Raymond and partner Richard Files of Osterville, William Butterworth and wife Elizabeth of North Attleboro, Claire E. Parlee and husband David of Cumberland, RI, James J. Butterworth and wife Jean Gendron of Riverside, RI and Mary Ann Parlee of Attleboro; two siblings: William Butterworth and Dorothy O'Connell both of New Hampshire; 26 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren. He was father of the late Elizabeth Jane Vacher and brother of the late Claire Carney and Arlene Leas and Mickey Wallack. Visiting hours will be Sunday, September 13 from 2-5 p.m. in the Sperry & McHoul Funeral Home, 15 Grove Street, NORTH ATTLEBORO. A Funeral Mass will be Monday, September 14 at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, 14 Park Street, North Attleboro. Burial to follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery & Arboretum, Attleboro Falls.
