To All the Downes Family Members...
Remembering Ed at this time is such a mixture of sadness, appreciation and fondness. We will certainly miss his friendly and considerate presence in the neighborhood, as he never failed to demonstrate his genuine concern for all of us - as well as our children, our homes, our jobs and our pets! His remarkable memory and continued interest in all facets of life were admirable. He was a wonderful role model and dear friend. We will miss him.
We extend our apologies to you for not attending the services; we did not receive notice of Ed's death until today, as we were out of town. We wish you all comfort and solace as you endure your sorrow.

I am very sorry. We were best friends in college. We met at Chateau Frontenac at a New Year Eve party, 1928-29, in Quebec. At the costume party, Eddie appeared as a North End vegetable vendor complete with cart he brought from Boston. Later we met as freshman at Harvard during try-outs for freshmen football manager. Our friendship grew. We were best friends and roomed together one year. We have attended Harvard reunions together for many years, with our adult children. We always enjoyed being together. I am very sad.
