JAMES McCLURE Obituary

McCLURE, James King Died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on April 5, 2014 after a courageous eleven-year battle with cancer. Born on May 4, 1954 in Hartford, Connecticut, the son of Lambert Hicks McClure and Marian McCane McClure, Jim spent his early childhood in West Hartford, CT. After the early death of his father, his mother married William Arthur Flint and the family moved to Hamden, CT. While there, Jim attended the Glenridge Elementary School and Hamden Hall Preparatory School. In 1973, Jim graduated from Suffield Academy, where he was president of the student government. In 1977, he graduated from Hobart College where he was president of Sigma Phi fraternity and received his Bachelors degree in English. After college, Jim spent time in New York City before settling in the Boston area. His business career started with McGraw Hill Publishing. From there, he joined Computerworld, where he was the national sales manager for their start-up publication, Digital News. In 1989, Jim joined Korn Ferry, a renowned international executive search firm, where he became the firms youngest partner. After many successful years in the recruitment industry, Jim joined Keystone/Essex Partners and found his passion in the new field of executive coaching, the area in which he worked tirelessly throughout his illness, helping many people reinvent their lives. Jim married the love of his life, Sidney Peard, in 1981 and together they raised two extraordinary daughters, Lindsay Peard and Molly Lambert, now ages 28 and 26. Jim and Sidney spent most of their married years in Duxbury, Massachusetts, enjoying family life with many very close friends. Jim devoted much of his life to volunteer activities that involved his family and youth. Mentoring teens in the confirmation program at Pilgrim Church, volunteering at the Duxbury Yacht Club, and starting and then coaching the girls basketball B team were favorites. However, he found his true passion when be began his 14-year association with Crossroads for Kids, an organization providing summer opportunities and ongoing support and resources for young people from at-risk environments. Jim was a galvanizing force, drawing on his warmth and infectious spirit to engage the full Duxbury community around the work and mission of this amazing organization. He served on their Board of Trustees for many years and was active as a mentor and a coach as well. Jim will be remembered for his deep sense of integrity, his fierce loyalty, and, most especially, his exceptional gift for listening, engaging, and mentoring people of all ages. im is survived by his wife, Sidney Peard McClure and his daughters Lindsay of Norwich, VT. and Molly McClure newly relocated to Duxbury, MA; his sisters, Susan Harris of Duxbury, MA and Betsy Foote of Orlando, FL; his stepsister, Barbara Flint Bradley of Branford, CT and stepbrother, William Arthur Flint, Jr. of Vero Beach, FL. and their children. He is also survived by three nieces, Lisa Badeau of Duxbury, Annette Donovan of Maynard, MA, and Sarah Fonkalsrud of San Rafael, CA, his nephew, Curtis Foote of Orlando, FL, and countless other extended family members and close friends. A memorial service will be held at Pilgrim Church in Duxbury, April 11, 2014, 11:00 am. What a wonderful man. I worked with Jim for just a short time when he was with Keystone Partners but will never forget his great intellect and incredible personal warmth. He always had a kind word and his sense of humor was legendary. I am most grateful to have known him and send my heartfelt sympathy and prayers to his wife and daughters.

My first memory of time spent with Jim was when he met with me for an exit interview as I was leaving Crossroads for Kids back in 2002. He listened...really listened...to everything I had to say (there was a lot!), and validated me while at the same time gently coaching me. I will never forget him advising me to keep the door open, that he had a feeling I would be back soon. Sure enough, within 6 months I was back at Crossroads and it's been my passion ever since. That first meeting really set the tone for all that followed, and I adored working alongside Jim to help change kid's lives. Jim has been an inspiration, mentor, coach, and cheerleader, and has helped me grow as a leader in ways I never would have thought possible. He was always there to support me through tough management decisions, holding my hand and guiding me with his immense wisdom and helping me forgive myself for not always being perfect. When I was diagnosed with cancer in 2012, Jim was my guiding light. He was one of the few people that felt comfortable cracking cancer jokes with me, and checked in every few weeks to see how I was doing, celebrate every treatment milestone and make me laugh despite his own health issues. He was truly one of a kind, and I feel very blessed to have had him in my life. Thank you Sidney, Lindsay and Molly for sharing your amazing husband and dad with me and with all the kids at Crossroads for all these years. While there will never be another Jim, we will do our very best to honor his legacy with compassion, humor, and of course...lots of dancing! xxx Deb

I loved Jim McClure. I was his secretary, office manager and finally fellow recruiter at Korn/Ferry from 1988-1995. Can you imagine what it was like to clean Jim's office and fill out his expense report?! I remember the time a car rental was left at the airport curb because Jim was late for the plane. Uh, Jim, you're not supposed to abandon cars at airports! He worked hard and loved harder. Seeing his face now, helps me smile through my tears. Jim, thanks for being such a special person. I will always be thankful for your friendship. Sydney, Lindsay and Molly, I send you all peace during this time. With much love, Leslie.
