JAMES UTTERBACK Obituary

UTTERBACK, James MIT Sloan Professor MIT Sloan School of Management, Professor James "Jim" Utterback passed away, in Newburyport, MA, on September 14, at the age of 83. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Peggy; sister, Dorothy Magliocca; children, Camille and Matthew Utterback; and their families. Jim was born in Monterey, California, in 1941, to Lt. Col. Gene Utterback and Helen (Pieniadz) Utterback. He met his wife, Peggy (Nichols), at Northwestern University. Jim earned his Ph.D. from MIT in 1968. After beginning his career as a professor at Indiana University, he returned to MIT in 1974, where he spent five decades teaching and studying technological innovation and entrepreneurship. His landmark work on "dominant design" remains foundational for scholars and practitioners. Jim will be deeply missed. View full obituary and November 8th memorial details at bit.ly/JMU-Obit
