Dear Paige and Family,
My sincere condolences to you at Jan's passing. Unfortunately, I lost touch with Jan/Rocco many years ago in the 1970s and did not know that he was so sick. Jan, Tom Duggan and I had some great times together. I especially remember the summer of 1973 hanging out down in the Harbor, being on Jan's father's boat and cruising the town in Jan's tan, convertible Chevy Nova. He was really into listening to J. Geils that summer. Jan had a fun-loving spirit and smile. I pray that you are comforted by the good memories of times together in the days ahead. May you rest in peace, Jan.

Rocko- that's how I remember him- though I don't think I ever called him that. How we began to hang out together I can't recall- but hang out we did. We crawled under and around junk cars to get parts for our cars to keep them running (Mr. Silvia actually did the work- we just handed him tools). We didn't drive far, just the usual route- school to Pegotty Beach to Egypt Beach to Minot Beach to 'the pits' to Quincy Gas- then repeat. We slept out on the Silvia's family boat, 'borrowed' Jason's runabout for late night high speed harbor tours- always ending with a stop at Jan's favorite place, the all night donut shop- usually ending with Harbormaster Pooler telling us to 'get back to the boat right now and if I see you out again tonight you know what will happen'. We knew what would happen- a call to Mr. Silvia, or a tip-off to Jason that we used his boat- both to be avoided at all costs. Jan liked living on the edge- but not that close to the edge- so back to the boat we would go, Jan carefully calculating the fuel usage in Jason's boat so he could replace it in the morning.

We lost track of each other years and years ago, but when I am torturing my family with stories from 'when I was a kid', Jan's name comes up often- and it always makes me smile. He was funny, sneak-up-on-you smart, and adventurous- bigger than life. I am happy to learn how successful he was in work and in family and sad to learn of his passing. I would like to express my sincerest condolences to his entire family.

Paige and family,

I am very sorry to hear of Jan’s passing. It seems like only yesterday we were all enjoying the carefree days of Scituate. The memories are too numerous to mention, but Jan (a/k/a Rocco) was a legend back in “the day”. He was always fun to be around, and there certainly was never a dull moment. Jan was a strong person, and fought to the end, and I am sure you are now a stronger person because of Jan’s plight.

Take comfort in the fact that you are surrounded by caring friends and family that will help you and your family get through this extremely difficult time.

Please let me know if I can help in any way.
