My deepest condolences.
I met John around 23 years ago. We became fast friends when he came to my barbershop for a haircut. He was a good talker! We spent many hours together over coffee. Or, we spent hours walking the Isabella Gardner museum. I miss him.
He is a true gentle man.

In typical fashion, Mayor Menino at the right time, found the right person for the job. John's strength of character, humility, and leadership are qualities that we all should admire. He will be sorely missed.

John was a generous, engaging, soft-spoken man, with strong conviction. After he had moved to Winthrop, we had connected at my office, with John explaining he knew well of my work, & never imagined I was the same guy whose illustrations for numerous city projects he had seen. We hit it off immediately, and he trusted my opinions & discretion & we exchanged many an impromptu meeting on numerous subjects, as well as town affairs. John had a distinctive, soft laugh, & he found humor in unexpected ways. His gentle manner belied his heroic military experiences, that I only learned about much, much later in our friendship. John's broad range of interests always kept our chats lively & fun. John' s wisdom, integrity & clear-sighted, as well as his humor, will be dearly missed.

John was a hugely important political strategist and organizer in Michigan Democratic campaigns for decades. Though he mostly moved behind the scenes, his reputation preceded him wherever he went, and when he spoke, everybody listened - from county commissioners to Presidents, and all of us who worked in their campaigns.
