MARGARET CHU Obituary

CHU, Margaret (Chen-Ying Li) 93, of Lincoln, MA, for 46 years, died peacefully at home on Friday, June 6, 2014. She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Chauncey C. Chu, a Registered Professional Engineer and former Senior Vice President of Wang Laboratories of Lowell, MA. She is also survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Chauncey & Barbara Chu of Westford; daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn & Jack Sloboda of Hudson, NH, six adult grandchildren and spouses, Danya & Curt Bell of Nashua, NH; Kara & Jeff Viel, of Amherst, NH; John & Genny Sloboda of Littleton; Gregory & Kristen Sloboda of Littleton; Jodi & Jeff Ucran of Arlington and Bryan Chu of Boston. Margaret was born, raised and educated as a single child in Tsingtao, China where her father, Mr. Li Shing Hsuan was the CFO of the Asiatic Petroleum Company. She excelled in many sports while in high school and was on the schools basketball team that competed in regional games. She came to the United States on the last steamship from Tsingtao shortly before Pearl Harbor, took and completed her nurses training at the St. Therese Hospital School of Nursing in Waukegan, IL, in 1943. She met her future husband at Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN, and was married in the schools University Chapel in 1944. Both she and her husband became naturalized US citizens in 1954 under a bill sponsored by the late Senator Leverett Saltonstall. She devoted her entire life in being a devoted wife and good mother and endured the hardships in war time America when even milk and eggs were rationed for infants. In addition to pampering her brood of two children, six adult grandchildren and ten great grandchildren, ages two to eleven, she enjoyed orchids, quilting and Chinese cooking. She and her husband have sailed and flown across both the Atlantic and the Pacific several times and have driven exactly one dozen cross country trips visiting virtually every National Park in the US and Canada. The family wishes to express their deep appreciation for the compassionate hospice services provided by Good Shepard Community Care. Services will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, a remembrance may be sent to Naka Infusion Center, c/o Emerson Health Care Foundation, 133 Old Road to Nine Acre Corner, Concord, MA 01742. Arrangements were made by the J.A. Healy Funeral Home, 57 North Main St., WESTFORD, MA. Please visit online guestbook at www.HealyFuneralHome.com

Dear Uncle Chauncey:

I was just thinking about the parties my parents used to have and it reminded me how much I admired you and Auntie Margaret. I hope you are doing well as the first year has passed since Auntie's passing.

All my best wishes,
Patty

Dear Chauncey and Family,
I was so very sorry to hear about Margaret's passing. I often think about her and the many hours we shared talking on my porch about her childhood in China and her Orchids which she enjoyed so much. She was a lovely and caring woman. I will remember her always in my prayers. God Bless you and the family in your time of sorrow.

RIP Auntie Margaret, my mother's beloved friend of 60+ years. You nourished me with your delectable Chinese specialties that beat the best restaurants on the planet, threw unforgettable parties, created clever and colorful hand-crocheted pom-poms so my suitcases would stand out from the crowd, shared Mahjongg-table wisdom and advice so forthright no one else would dare to say out loud, then cackled with delight when you turned out to be predictably and perfectly right every time. You left an indelible mark during your 93 years, which even you would (modestly) agree was, "pretty good." We already miss you.
