Mary Doherty Obituary

DOHERTY, Mary Louise Beloved first born of Charles & Helen (Cotter) Doherty on February 26, 1925, passed away at 84 years young, at her life long home in Medford, on July 20, 2009. Known to those who loved her as "Auntie" or "The Colonel" she lived an extraordinary, accomplished and active life. Although she would never agree, she truly was a shining star in the realm of The Greatest Generation. She grew up in with a keen sense for sports and as a young girl met the "love of her life" Ted Williams. She was an avid golfer and played last week with friends at Indian Ridge C.C. She was a life long parishioner, graduate and extraordinary minister of St. Clement Parish. She graduated from Fitchburg State College and commenced her career as a teacher in Europe and the Medford School District where she retired as Vice Principal of Robert's Junior High School. She interrupted her teaching during the Korean War and enlisted in the Air Force. She served during the Korea War and continued with reserve duty and retired as one of the Air Force's earliest female Colonels. She was a proud American and was always "Red White and Blue" in heart and spirit and insisted on buying only American made cars throughout her life. She traveled extensively to exotic locals and especially enjoyed her Christmas in Bethlehem and Easter at The Vatican, and also her 80th birthday bash with dear friends and relatives in Las Vegas. After "retiring" she provided great companionship and care to her mother "Nell". She also served, in a then predominately male bastion, as a Board Member of the Medford Savings Bank. Auntie is survived by her sister Joan H. Mahoney of Fairfield, Connecticut along with 10 beloved nieces and nephews and 12 grandnieces and nephews. Her beloved brother and fellow sports fan, Charles Doherty of Stoneham predeceased her in 2008. Calling hours will be held at the George L. Doherty Funeral Home, 855 Broadway (Powder House Sq) SOMERVILLE, Thursday morning 9:30 - 10:30am followed by a Funeral Mass of Christian burial at St. Clement's Church, Medford at 11 AM. Interment Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford. In her honor all are encouraged to wear red, white and blue to the service. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Joseph, 637 Cambridge St. Brighton, MA 02135-2800.

I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Mary Lou. Such an energetic woman with a zest for life. She often spoke of her family with such love. She will be missed. I got to know Mary Lou very well over the past decade. She was one of my favorite patients at Winchester Periodontics.

My deepest sympathy.... I always felt privileged to have Aunt Mary Lou as my godmother. She was an incredible woman, always so full of life and looking for (and finding) the good in people and circumstances. The extent of her love of God, country, and family was matched by only a few; She was a great example of what we are called to be. I hope she and Dad will enjoy a few rounds of golf on Heaven's course!
Love and peace, Kim Formwalt Mistovich

Mary Lou was loved & admired by all who knew her. I feel as though I know all the nieces & nephews because she talked about you all the time. She loved spending time with all her family. You are all so fortunate to have her as your sister & aunt.
We so enjoyed her at golf. Every spring she would entertain us with tales of her latest trip. She was really a fun person to be with & she will be missed by all of us.

Ah, this one tears a hole in my heart. In a family of superb people, it is very hard to single anyone out, but Auntie Lou was certainly up there. I remember her more than fondly over the years: she was always upbeat, full of life, never less than welcoming and loving. I always felt like she treated me like one of her own. And you know what? I'll bet there are hundreds more like me all over the place. Auntie Lou had a full and blessed life, and she will be missed by all. My love and sympathy goes out to Joanie and her entire family. Mac

Mary Lou was the first person to introduce herself to me as a new member at Indian Ridge Country Club several years ago. Her welcoming smile, delightful personality and sincere warmth will be truely missed at our club..
I only wish I had the opportunity to know her longer.
My condolences to her family and her good friend Liz McDonough.

Maz Deluca wrote, "...she carried her bag"(last week at golf). To all of us who knew and loved her, that fact is no surprise. An outstanding Administrator in the Medford Schools but, more importantly, a tremendous person. May she rest in peace.

"Auntie Lou" to everyone, including Denise and me! She was the rock solid example of fidelity to faith, friends, country and, most importantly, family. Joanie, Christine and family, we are so lucky to have had the chance to know Auntie Lou for so many years. We are so sorry for your loss.

I have admired Mary Lou since she waas my fifth grade teacher at the Hancock School in Medford. We kids thought she looked just like Doris Day. What a special person! I remember going to her house to sell Girl Scout cookies. She bought from everyone in the class!!! Years and years later, I worked with her and her fellow Board members at Medford Savings Bank. She was still beautiful, still wonderful, and still "my idol." She really lived a fabulous life---I used to call her Auntie Mame! She was always off somewhere, either to visit with her family or to somewhere wildly exotic. I feel so lucky to have shared some time with this bright star. There is no one---no one---like her on earth! My sincere condolences------

I was so saddened to hear of Mary Lou's passing. I know I can say with certainty that everyone would have loved to have had her as their "Auntie". I will always remember her joie de vivre. Ever smiling, ever energetic and carrying her bag while most of us struggled to push ours. Heaven just got a new angel.

One of the nicest ladies I ever had the pleasure of knowing. We played golf together last Friday and she could still hit a ball. I never saw MaryLou without the American flag pinned to her collar! I will miss her always optimistic attitude and seeing her walk down the fairway at Indian Ridge carrying her golf bag. She was one of kind. May you Rest in Peace, Marylou and if you can find your way to my daughter, Krit, please give her a hug and kiss for me.
Love, Pam (your "little chum")
