MELISSA MEYER Obituary

MEYER, Melissa Saltman Beloved wife of Eugene Bradley Meyer, died October 2, 2013, at her home in Lincoln, Massachusetts at the age of 70. Born July 2, 1943, she was the daughter of the late Elias B. and Alice Saltman, of Newark, New Jersey. She graduated from Weequahic High School in Newark, in 1961, and received a B.A. from Bennington College in 1965. As a young woman, she was a serious student of the ballet, and maintained her interest in classical music and dance throughout her life, serving for a time on the board of the American Ballet Theatre in New York. She was Chairman of the board of Family Service of Greater Boston for 12 years, served on the board of Bennington College, and chaired the board of the DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park in Lincoln for 12 years. She was a co-advisor with her husband for a family foundation in the New York Community Trust. A self-taught master cook, she could improvise delicious dishes and specialized in desserts, running a small catering company for a time. She raised three sons, one of whom is a professional cook and teacher of cooking. She was the beloved matriarch of a growing family, who mourn her passing. Both through her charitable work and by personal example she instilled in her children a passion for self-improvement and for helping others. Melissa and her family spent many summers in Maine, both in Blue Hill and on Hog Island in Penobscot Bay. Her interest in the arts extended to chamber music, and she served on the board of Kneisel Hall Chamber Music School and Festival for a number of years. She is survived by her husband; her son Nicholas David Meyer, of New York City and his wife Michelle; her son Jacob Eugene Meyer of Chatham, New York and his wife Rosamond; her son Nathaniel Saltman Meyer, of Brookline, Massachusetts and his wife Erin; her sister Susanna Brooks of New York City; her brother David Saltman, of Miami, Florida and his wife Pemmy; and three grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on November 9, 2013, at 2:00 PM at the First Parish in Lincoln. Further information at www.concordfuneral.com.

What a wonderful person we all have lost. Brad, our hearts are with you and the growing family she adored. We never had enough time together.

Susi Saltman Brooks and I became best friends on our first day of college in 1965 and Melissa was always her adored older sister to whom I felt closely connected by years of family events, stories, marriages, babies, parental loss, and now, so very sadly, death. Brad, Nick, Nate, Jake - my most sincere sympathies on your profound loss. Terry Goldstein Joshi and of course Satish and Amanda.

A fine, decent person with a keen and sensible mind and spirit. Will be much missed; indeed, already is.
