ROBERT FRIEL Obituary

FRIEL, Robert "Bob" Of Maynard, MA & Tuftonboro, NH, passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 4th, after a short battle with cancer. He was 84. Bob grew up in Oswego New York and graduated from SUNY Oswego in 1964. In 1968, Bob married Greta Woodward, and they raised their three children in Melrose, MA. Every summer, the family spent time at their cabin on Mirror Lake in NH-fishing, swimming, and enjoying "the woods." Bob taught high school social studies for 35 years at Stoneham High School. He had a deep passion for learning, particularly in Russian history and culture and led student trips to Russia in the 1980s and 1990's. He was honored to be the first American teacher sent to Russia on a Fulbright scholarship in 1992–93. After retiring in 2001, Bob traveled and volunteered extensively in Bosnia and Russia. He was a proud and active member of Alcoholics Anonymous for over 47 years, helping countless people on their path to recovery. Bob is survived by his children, Michele Mullen (Mike) of Maynard, MA, Ryan and Brendan Friel of Whitefish, MT, and Debbie Bronzo (Alex) of Putnam, NY. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Ethan and Jordan Mullen, Alex and Kyle Bronzo; his former wife, Greta Friel of Maynard, MA; his sisters, Kathy Hall and Sr. Mary Friel, SND; and many nieces and nephews. Visiting Hours: A Celebration of Life will be planned for late Spring.

I had only known Bob for five years or so but he was always friendly and caring. He had a vast knowledge of history and was very interesting to talk with. My condolences to his family.

41 years ago I was introduced to Bob at Melrose Sunday night, I looked forward to our talks
He and I were smokers so plenty of time shooting the breeze. Bob helped more people than he knew in many ways
May the higher power grant him rest
My condolences to the family
He was respected and loved by many
Now I will wipe the tears from eyes and smile knowing I benefitted from Bob
