He received an MA in European History from the University of Arizona in 1968. He served in the Army National Guard of Arizona and U.S. Army Reserves from 1968 until 1971, when he was honorably discharged as a Specialist Four. He attended the University of Chicago between 1971 and 1976, receiving his PhD in Early Modern European History (1975) and MA in Library Science (1976). He worked as Director of the Cunningham Memorial Special Collections Library at Indiana State University from 1976 to 1981. He was the Director of the Indiana Historical Society Library in Indianapolis from 1981 to 1987; he also served as a member of the Board of Trustees for the Madame C.J. Walker Urban Life Center. He was Director of the John J. I had the honour of meeting Robert at Boston college some years ago. He told me the whole story of the recovery of the Lough Ree cross slabs then. We in Ireland , and especially those in the midlands and on the great river Shannon owe him an immense debt of gratitude for his timely and honourable intervention. May his scholarly soul rest in peace. Dr Harman Murtagh? Lough Ree, Ireland.

Bob was a very engaged and engaging scholar and administrator. He was so helpful to us in forming the Indiana German Heritage Society and fostering research in ethnic studies in Indiana when he was at the Indiana Historical Society. We shall remember him.

Dear Ms. O´Neill and family,Bob was a wonderful and generous colleague. I enjoyed his wit, his stories, and his capacious knowledge on a breadth of topics. He was a consummate professional and, at the same time, salt of the earth. He will be missed. May memories of Bob warm the days ahead. Peace, Filippa Marullo Anzalone, BC Law School

Helen and children, I am so sorry to learn of Bob's passing. I worked for him at the Indiana Historical Society and he was a great director. He joined staff for Halloween dress up and April Fool's pranks. Loved visiting him in Massachusetts and Arizona. He was a great friend and wonderful smile for all. I'll miss him. Susan Darnell

Very sad to hear of Bob's death. He was a student of mine and also a friend. I remember visiting him at the BC library several times.

While many people may speak of Bob in terms of his intellect and skill in guiding special libraries, my first thought was of his kindness and ready smile. May his loved ones find peace and comfort during this difficult time. Susan Sutton, Indiana Historical Society

Mr. O´Neill, never met you, but I have numerous conversations with your son, Dan. Great guy, and over these years at Wednesday Night Meeting. Dan, and I would have pizza, or a chicken parm sub in our pizza shop in Wellesley. Not many changes in our selections, but others select, Dan and I, same old week by week.

My understanding from Dan, that you were an extremely person. I think that Dan is quite common to you.

I will have a Mass at St. Matthew´s in Southborough, for you, and your family. In my opinion, you´ll be already in Heaven. Be well.
