Ruth SOUZA Obituary

SOUZA, Ruth (Flynn) Age 100 of Lexington, MA, died on August 10, 2025 at Newbridge on Charles in Dedham, MA.

Ruth was born in Brighton, MA, daughter of Winifred (Perkins) and John Flynn. She attended Girls Latin High School and the University of Michigan, completing a Master's degree in biochemistry, at a time when fewer women did so. Later, she worked in the laboratory of Dr. Fritz Lipmann, who discovered co-enzyme A, for which he won the Nobel Prize in 1953. Ruth assisted her late husband Richard ("Dick") Souza in the administration of structural engineering firm Souza, True and Partners. She held committee posts for the Town of Lexington, and was active in the Friends of Cary Library, FISH (an organization providing transportation for seniors), and the Lexington Senior Center, where she helped prepare taxes and assist with other client financial needs. She was also a literacy volunteer for many years. Ruth was a proud progressive who led a life characterized by a strong sense of personal responsibility and active participation. She leaves three children, Richard, of Brookline, John of Brunswick, Maine, and Anne of Arlington. A Memorial Gathering will be held at a future date.

Earlier today

Ruth was one of a kind. I always enjoyed her contributions during Book Club. She was a valuable member of the Five Fields Community and a nice person who will be missed. RIP
