Susan SOLOMON Obituary

SOLOMON, Susan S. (Snell) Of Lincoln, December 6, 2024.

The Memory Care Aides report that they woke Susan at 6:00 AM on Friday, December 6, 2024, she blinked a few times and then stopped breathing. This marked the end of the greater than three years that Susan's muscles and voice had been prisoner of dementia.

Susan arrived conventionally on June 5, 1932. Her parents were Ethel and Maurice Snell of South Brookline, MA. She attended Baker School, Brookline High and Simmons University, graduating with a degree in Chemistry.

Susan met her future husband, Stanley Solomon, in March, 1949 at a Newton Temple's acquaintance dance.

During Susan's Simmons summers, she worked as a waitress at a resort hotel in Bethlehem and the next two summers, she was the Roll Girl at the Mt. Washington hotel.

I was awarded a fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh in Biophysics and we moved to Pittsburgh in 1954. Our stay there lasted six months, thanks to my Draft Board. Susan had found a job with a University of Pittsburgh English doctor in the Public Health Dept.

After basic training, I was assigned to blood letting training at Fort Sam Houston. I had Susan come down and she found a job with a bird colonel in fourth Army Headquarters, who quickly realized he had hired someone well above normal. We had an off-post apartment.

When discharged, we headed, now with a car, to Boston with a visit stop in Youngstown and a pregnant Susan. We settled in Garden Crest in Waltham.

Our first son, Daniel, was born and Susan became a learning mother.

When we had saved enough to buy a house, we moved to Lexington and stayed in that house for 50 years.

Susan's daytime activities were connected with supporting the Estabrook School, things that involved Daniel. This was followed by a group of Lexington ladies giving support in a Boston school and a return to Estabrook support when our son Lawrence was there.

The focus of night-time activities was Town Government. Susan was an elected Town Meeting member until we left Lexington. Susan was a longtime member of the Conservation Commision and accepted a "promotion" to The "Senior Conservation Crew" when it appeared that new faces could be desirable. Susan usually worked at the polls on election days.

Initial remunerative activities started on managing technical information electronically. That did not go well. She moved on to marketing for a new technology named "machine vision".

I believe Susan would identify her most important achievements as, number 1: Getting Julia Childs to modify her Beef Wellington recipe in the second edition of her cookbook and number 2: Getting New Zealand's World Cup Racing entry managers to evaluate a machine vision device for reading and adjusting their boat's main sail.

A private Funeral Service was held, followed by interment at Westview Cemetery, Lexington. Douglass/Customer logo

I have the best memories of camping and outdoor activities with the Solomon family when I was growing up. Susan always made things fun -- her keen wit and wonderful spirit won the day even when it got rainy or muddy. My deepest condolences to the family, Susan was a special person.

Hi Stan -
A bridge-playing friend of mine is moving to the Commons and I told her to look for you. So sorry to hear about Sue. Hope you're well. I'm at Orchard Cove. I was reminiscing with my son Craig about how Danny rescued him from a gorge in NH, and how we missed Danny. Also wonder if Jo Morse is from WV.
