TAYLOR STOEHR Obituary

Stoehr, Taylor
Died Sept. 14, 2013. He is lovingly remembered by all his family, friends, the many students and colleagues from his years of teaching, the Gestalt Therapy Community, the probationers whose lives he touched, the garden groups and poetry groups he inspired, the readers of his many books and poems, and all those he met in his daily life. His interest in people was insatiable and in his heart he included us all, recognizing and valuing us as we do him. We will be celebrating his life at a Memorial in July of 2014.

Just seeing this place to share. I´m reading through Taylor´s verses to a mutual friend who I helped look after in her last years. He knowing her forever, sent uplifting letters and poems for her reading and her memories. They sustained us all. Thankful I got to know this kind and generous person the last few years of his life. Rest in peace. Never forgotten. Blessings.

I remember his kindness while in grad school at UMASS Boston. I corresponded with him after I went to Canada for my ph. D. I still have the texts we studied in his seminar. What a kind and generous man and teacher.

Taylor was a great teacher, mentor, and friend. His love and commitment to humanity and his students was infectious. He saw potential in me that changed my life. I became a teacher because of him and hope I have had the impact on students that he did on me. I think of him often and will always cherish my relationship with him and UMass Boston.

He is very friendly and helpful. He loves Chinese poems. I remember that he said he liked Chinese Qingming Festival because it is the festival to remember the ancestors.

Getting this inbox notice of a new entry on Taylor's page is such a lovely reminder of Taylor. Not that I need reminding -- I think of him often, and always when I'm in Cambridge, which at this age slowly (or not so slowly) empties of people I have loved and still do love. Such a wonderful man, and such a wonderful friend.

I did not 'know' Taylor, but in seeing him speak in the documentary on Paul Goodman, I got a sense of his humanity, class, and compassion. I looked him up to see if I could meet him. Sad to say, no. My late condolences for this lovely human.

Tonight I went to google one of my favorite professors from my time at UMASS Boston, and here I find his obituary. I took at least four classes of his classes in 2 years, which speaks to how much I enjoyed him as a professor. Somedays, if I was lucky I would see him on the shuttle or the T, and I loved our chats.
I think of him as a Mr. Rogers because he was so kind in his teachings. Yet, the stories from his past make him seem like he was too much of an activist to be a Mr. Rogers.
To his family, know he is remembered for his kindness and goodness.

I have corresponded with Taylor off and on since 1987, and am so disappointed that he is gone before I got to meet him! I will always be grateful for his support and encouragement as a fellow writer. Go in peace, Taylor; you've earned it.

We in Otis, MA are very fortunate to have crossed paths with Taylor. Up to the end, we played vigorous ping pong, enjoyed weekly gardening activities, and learned from Taylor how to be strong and gentle, compassionate and kind.

I loved Taylor and knew him through Changing Lives. And he changed many. What a wonderful mind and heart.

Taylor was my mentor and I looked up to him throughout by years at UMASS. We lost touch over the past 3 years, although he continued to pen pal with my brother in prison. I wish i could have been there to see him off. Fair winds old friend. The world is less off without you.

I'm so sad that Taylor isn't happily living in the woods in Otis, as I had imagined him these last couple years. Taylor inspired and supported me through the 80s, helped me when I was in grad school in the 90s, and was a faraway friend since I moved out to Oregon. I will miss him even tho' I haven't seen him for 2 years.

For the last three years Taylor was a mainstay of the Creative Writing Group at Gould Farm in Monterey, Massachusetts. I was intimidated by him at first - a scholar, author of many books and a professor, Taylor was definitely a big fish in a small pond - but I quickly came to know him as an enouraging friend, not a teacher. Taylor's great contribution was finding the best points in our work and praising them in a way that made us want to write more and better. He was a good friend. We will miss him very much. I would like to attend his memorial.

I was one of many students who had Taylor Stoehr for Freshman English at the University of Massachusetts at Boston. He was helpful, fair, and gave me the confidence to be able to write an intelligent and cogent essay.
