ELIZABETH GIVENS Obituary
Betty was born to Arthur "Bud" Newton and Lucille Lightbourne Newton in Brownsville, Texas in 1930. She married the love of her life, John Ernest Givens, Jr., in 1948.
Betty was a dutiful Air Force wife 28 years, and moved with her growing family throughout the U.S., including spending 4 years in the Philippines.
The family settled back in Brownsville in 1968. Betty's greatest treasure was having a house full of children.
In 1970, Betty started her first business, The Village Hut Grocery. Later, she ventured into various clothing businesses. She loved her busy, working life and had no intention of retiring.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, John; an infant daughter, Katherine; two sons, Larry and Roger; her parents; and siblings, Arthur "Sonny" Newton Jr. and Mellie Newton.
Betty is survived by eleven children: Laura (Alan) Duval, Johnny Givens III, Debbie (John) Kilroy, Patty (Johnny) Burns, Philip Givens, Cynthia (Buster) Armstrong, Peter (Janie) Givens, Ellie Stevenson, Liz De La Fuente, Geraldine (Mike) Hufham, and Valerie (Chris) Heyse; twenty-eight grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren and one that is on the way; a sister Cornelia Masso; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.
Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 24, 2014, in the East Chapel at Darling-Mouser Funeral Home with the recitation of the holy rosary scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday evening at Darling-Mouser.
The Funeral Mass is scheduled for 12 Noon on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2014 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 1200 Lincoln St. Committal services will follow at Buena Vista Burial Park.
Serving as pallbearers are her sons-in-law: Alan Duval, John Kilroy, Johnny Burns, Buster Armstrong, Mike Hufham, and Chris Heyse.
