Dear Hynes Family,
I have had the habit of calling Charlie every other week for better than five years. He and I were best of friends from our freshman years through our senior years at the old Buffalo Technical High School. We even skipped school together. For the past four weeks I tried to get him on the phone and only got a message from him to leave my name. The last time I called him (I don't remember the date) he was having the walk in bathtub installed and the plumber was about to leave. When I called his telephone number today the numbedr was disconnected. I got on the internet and fround his obit from the Buffalo News. Charlie and I were both going to to the Tech picnic thie year. I read all the other messages about Charlie and every one of them attests to Charlie character.

Pete was by far, the most knowledgeable person that I knew in Customs. He was honest, straight forward and did not like to be bullied into anything that he felt was inappropriate or unfair to the Customs work force. He was, "Mr. Customs". Pete could have been the Commissioner of Customs had he put his mind to it. His biggest drawback was that he was too honest a man to put up with the political intrigues that plagued many beuracracies. His loyalty was absolutely to the United States and the Service. Not to any individual(s) who sought to promote their own personal agendas. Pete was my mentor and an excellent one who took pride in his profession and the Customs Service. There will never be another Pete Hynes. He was perhaps the most sincere and honest person that I have ever met. I was proud to be his friend. He will be sorely missed.

To the Hynes family:
I was shocked and saddened by the news that Pete had passed away. I had an appointment scheduled to return his lamp and suspected something was wrong when I could not contact him. Pete was a good friend. I had worked for and with him for many years and our relation-
ship was usually hostile. This changed during the last few years. I recall that he was a charismatic supervisor and
acted as mentor to may young inspectors. He was the go-to guy on a variety of subjects especially Customs matters.
He was greatly respected for his fearless defense of what
he thought was right and was never known to back down
in the face of threats. He was an honest and honorable man and a worthy adversary. There was no love lost
between us and I recently learned that my name was not
unknown at his dinner table where he would vent his
frustrations with my latest idiotic idea.
He was witty and sardonic and as quick as a mongoose in
debate and one always had the idea that he knew he was
the smartest guy in the room. Upon meeting my mother
(a Trowbridge street South Buffalo lady, nee Caulfield) he
commented "Mrs Dietzel, may I shake the hand of a saint?"
When he met my wife he smiled like a cobra and said "Mrs. Dietzel, "You have my condolences!"
During the past few years we became friends. We went to
many lunches, I did minor chores for him and visited him
on a regular basis. I even sold is car for him. These visits
were always a pleasure. Pete would hold forth on his view
of current events, talk all about Customs people, speak
glowingly about the joys of being Irish, wax eloquent when
speaking of the comfort of family and friends and describe
in detail the place where bullies, charlatans and bad supervisors ought to be sent.
I found out that what I had construed to be obstinacy was,
in most cases, principles. He asked that our relationship
not be broadcast as it might upset the older men. I was not quite sure just what this meant, but agreed. I did
get my wife to accompany me and she found out that Pete was a hoot. She became his occasional shopper and his
official cookie baker and they both enjoyed the experience.
Recently Pete bought a very expensive walk in bath. I
believe my wife was the only lady he invited over to take a dip. My wife politely declined; she got the joke.
Whether for conversation, dinner or cookies we enjoyed Pete's conversation and company. We shall both miss his
smile, his charm and his unique view of the cosmos. He
was the best adversary I ever had.
We hope Pete is enjoying a good time in that part of heaven set aside for pure blooded Hibernians who kept the
faith. It is, I am sure, a grand place.

Kathy, Mary, Charlie & Jim, please accept my condolences on your father's passing. He was quite a guy. As John said, he was Derwood’s friend for many years, and I recall Dad saying he was his best friend. He always enjoyed your Dad, when after retirement, he would drop by and take him for a “ride” and they would be gone for hours.
You are all in our prayers.

Dear Kathy, Pat and Family:
There is always one lieutenant that doesn't get the word and I guess I'm that guy. I just found out about your dad yesterday and I am saddened at his passing and for your loss. Pete was my first supervisor at the Peace Bridge Warehouse and he always took good care of me. I use to talk to him at Tops and in spite of his difficulties he was always in a positive mood.
I'm sure Mike will be there to enter his vessel when his ship reaches the other shore.

Dar KG, Mary, Charlie, and Jim-
We are so sorry to learn of your Dad's passing. He was a great guy- I saw him last June after Laura McGowan's wedding and we had a great visit- one of many since I married and moved. I have great memories of Uncle Pete- showing up on Trowbridge Street with a Barbie dollhouse for my birthday (I was absolutely delighted); giving me tips on driving long before I had a permit (to this day, I always look over my shoulder before I make a lane change). He became the keeper of the memories for me- always had a story about my parents that I did not know about. Several years ago, I sent him a funny but nasty card for his birthday and he called me to tell me how much he loved it- so a tradition started- I always kept on eye out for the perfect (and perfectly nasty) card for him. I already have this year's card- guess I will have to send it to KG.
The Hynes and Smith kids were blessed to have such terrific parents and I can just imagine the partying that is going on in heaven now that he is there.
You are all in our prayers.

Dear Hynes Family,
We are so saddened to learn of the loss of your special Dad and Granddad. He was so proud of his family and always shared pictures with us. He was a great boss at Customs and a dear frined. We are so happy that we visited him last fall before we left for Florida. We will miss him.
It saddens us that we will not be able to offer our condolences in person since we are still in our winter home.
Be assured of our thoughts and prayers.

Dear Hynes Family :
We were so saddened to hear of the loss of your beloved Dad, Pete. We were so fond of him and your Mom, Patsy. They both had magnetic personalities and were loved by so many. We were reminded this morning about a day a few years ago when your Dad pulled into our driveway - knocked at the door and came into the house for an afternoon filled with very fond memories about the days gone by and he also wanted to show Neil his antique car - they were in the driveway for another few hours going over the car. Your Dad was a great guy and will be sorely missed by many. Please accept our deepest sympathies and sincere condolences on your loss. Please know that you will all be in our thoughts and prayers in this difficult days ahead.
Sincerely,
Maryanne Shea
