Fred Conway - A wonderful man and we all miss him

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam

July 12, 2011

The tears have all been shed now
We've said our last goodbyes
His souls been blessed
He's laid to rest
And it's now I feel alone
He was more than just a father
A teacher my best friend
He can still be heard
In the tunes we shared
When we play them on our own

As a boy he'd take me walking
By mountain field and stream
And he showed me things
not known to kings
And secret between him and me
Like the colours of the pheasant
As he rises in the dawn
And how to fish and make a wish
Beside the Holly Tree

I thought he'd live forever
He seemed so big and strong
But the minutes fly
And the years roll by
For a father and a son
And suddenly when it happened
There was so much left unsaid
No second chance
To tell him thanks
For everything he's done

I never will forget him
For he made me "what I am"
Though he may be gone
Memories linger on
And I miss him, my old man

Kevin and Fred,
Your Dad took a liking to me at a Holy Name meeting one night when he learned that my Dad was from the Ward. Never having been to McCarthy's, I was instructed that I should attend a command performance of his pals. A few pints later and, not only were we friends for life but he somehow figured a family relationship. He loved life, worked hard in the Irish tradition and was proudest of the family he had raised. A gentleman's gentleman whose command of the language became ever clearer in those special moments at McCarthy's. My sympathies on your loss. My happiness that you had the rich occasion to have spent your lifetimes with such an honorable man.

Dear Conway Family,

Sorry to hear about your loss. I did not know Fred, but from all accounts he was an outstanding person. When your grief subsides, I would appreciate finding out how he got the first name "Farry". Since he went by Fred, he probably knew my first cousin, Joe Rebhan, from St, Andrews. My mother, Mary Nicholson/McNicholas, was from County Sligo Ireland, near the Mayo border. Her mother, Ann Marren, was from Doocastle, Mayo. My Dad's parents (Pat Farry and Bridgid Wynne) were from Sligo. Thanks for your help.

To the Conway and Sullivan families, our thoughts and prayers are with you. Not only was Fred a fixture at St. Andrew's, he was a good friend of my dads when they worked together at OGS. A true gentleman. God bless him and all your family.

Uncle Fred would often say that " this is a great country" ... but only because of the likes of himself and of course Aunt Kay. It is the classic American immigrant story. Those who came and asked for nothing but gave everything. Fred was a proud American but never forgot where he came from. His many visits back to see his brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews will never be forgotten. They are the stuff of Conway legend. Stories almost too numerous to tell, but I have a feeling we are going to try! I have often repeated his story and the reaction is always the same, one of awe and amazement. There are many who landed on these shores and made more fame and fortune but there are none 'richer' than Fred Conway from Sharanamonragh, Ballycroy, County Mayo Ireland.

To Aunt Kay & entire Conway family,
I was saddened to hear about Fred's passing, but take comfort in knowing what a wonderful uncle he was and loving family moments we shared. Uncle Fred was the best uncle anyone could every ask for.
I was lucky growing up in Kenmore with my father Tony & Fred's deep rooted values in faith & family. Fred in particular always emphasized the importance of getting a good education and hard work. Values that to this day are very important to me & my family. I have great childhood memories of playing at your house, the Gaelic football games and the Irish Center. More memories than this media allows.
Cathy & I will not be able to attend the ceremonies, but Tony & Mike will represent well.
May God bless you and the Buffalo Conway clan during this time and always. I love you guys dearly. I'm just bummed I can't celebrate Fred's life with you in person.

Anne and family,

So very sorry for your loss. What a wonderful guy your dad was. I still remember his great Irish brogue.

To your family:

May the Irish hills caress you.
May her lakes and rivers bless you.
May the luck of the Irish enfold you.
And may the blessings of Saint Patrick behold you.

With our sympathy...

To Kevin, Pat, Mrs. Conway and the entire family, our deepest sympathy on the passing of a great man, Fred Conway. He will be missed but we must live now in the good memories of him. I remember he always wore a smile and in high school we would engage an argument in his basement over which was the tougher game--American Football vs. Gaelic Football. Rest In Peace, Fred.

One of the greatest stories ever told was of Fred chasing me down Warren ave in Kenmore, scissors in hand, while trying to cut my hair when I was very very young. I think that is the main reason I wore my hair so long for most of my adult life.
I was lucky enough to see both Fred and Kay @ my mother's funeral 5 years ago. I don't know if he had scissors on him, but he had that 'barber' look in his eyes.
My deepest sympathies to Kay and their wonderful family. Fred and the name Conway always brings a smile to my face. I dearly wish I could be there. Bless the entire Conway clan!
