John J. Bardo Sr., of Hamburg, retired chief financial officer for Bertrand Chaffee Hospital in Springville, died unexpectedly last Saturday in Mercy Hospital. He was 78.
Born in Jamestown, he earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from Kent State University in Ohio in 1962.
Mr. Bardo moved to the Buffalo area from Jamestown in 1968 and worked in various areas of health-care finance for Blue Cross Blue Shield, Mercy Hospital, Sisters Hospital, Columbus Hospital and Buffalo General Hospital.

In retirement, he was self-employed as an accountant and tax preparer.
From 1999 to 2008, Mr. Bardo also managed Niagara Hudson Cleaners and Niagara Hudson Properties, family-owned businesses started by his father-in-law on Buffalo's West Side.
During the past two years, he was an assistant to the recreation director at Orchard Heights in Orchard Park, transporting the residents on outings and coordinating their appointments.
A former resident of Orchard Park, he was a parishioner at Our Lady of Victory Basilica in Lackawanna.
His wife of 45 years, the former Barbara A. Manze, died Oct. 14.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary Jo Parsons; three sons, John J. Jr., Michael and James; a sister, Loretta; and seven grandchildren.

John, James, Michael & MaryJo,
I am saddened to hear of both your dad & mom's passing. I just saw the obituary for your father in the Buffalo News on Mon. 1/4/16. I've remembered the occasions we've shared together and how wonderful John and Barb were to me.
So sorry for your loss.
