CHUDY - Max Richard, Jr. "Sam"
August 24, 1924 - May 20, 2022. Max (also nicknamed Sam so people wouldn't mix him up with his father) is the loving husband and best friend to the late Norinne (Maltbie) Chudy who sadly passed on November 18, 2019, a week short of their 69th wedding anniversary. Max is the son of Max R. Sr. and Helen Chudy. He had an older sister, Phyllis Chudy. Max is survived by seven loving children, Louise Scuchter, Dr. Max R. III (Frances), the late Nancy Whitten, Jeanette Farrell (William), Norman (Debbie), the late Robert, and Mary Bates (Steve) of Portland, OR. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren: The late Jullian, Lorissa, Jessica, Nick, Shannon, Norm Jr., Sam, Morgan, Max IV, twins Maggie and Matthew, and Finlay; and five great-grandchildren: Tyler, William, Lyla, Theodore and Aria.
Max spent most of his 97 years in the Buffalo area and is an alumnus of East High School where he was the Junior and Senior class President, a three letter sports recipient, being the #1 singles tennis player and captain of his tennis team. Max continued on at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology). He enlisted in the Army/Air Force in World War II and served for four years, two years in the North Atlantic region. Upon honorable discharge, he came home to work at the family business, where he started helping at the young age of 9 years old until retiring at age 87. Even after retirement, he was President and chairman of the board and would always keep informed with the operation and finances of Chudy Paper Co. At one time, he was driving 70 thousand miles a year pursuing business in PA and NY. When his father passed away, he took on the reins in 1973 at Chudy Paper, Buffalo Paper and Rochester Paper which were then located at 930 Bailey Avenue, Buffalo. Max was very loyal to his employees, several of whom worked there for over 50 years! He always wanted to make sure that all the employees had a job forever! He would do the ordering of truckloads of paper bags, restaurant and supermarket supplies and make sure he always had enough stock, was throughout his entire life amazing with his math skill in his head - didn't even need a calculator! In sales, he took care of many customers, which he would still check on, especially the oldest customer that are still in business, Federal Meat Market and continued to keep in contact with his longtime customer and friends Dianne and Gust Calamunci from Johnny's Lunch in Jamestown since 1936. Max belonged to many business organizations and served on the board of directors of Villa Maria College and Union Camp Paper Co. in Savannah, GA, the Orchard Park Chamber of Commerce and the Orchard Park American Legion. Max continued into his adulthood on tennis and bowling leagues in Orchard Park. As a child, his parents had a cottage where he grew up in Crystal Beach. He especially loved driving (with work and for pleasure) on Sunday's to Canada, where he was always looking for a summer home to rent. We rented in Point Abino and Thunder Bay, where he finally bought a beautiful cottage that left his kids and grandkids with wonderful memories of the beach, swimming, boating, Crystal Beach Park and summer birthday parties. It was a great way to spend precious times together! Max and Norinne spent every summer there and some winters in Florida where they had a condo for a short time. They enjoyed season tickets to the Buffalo Sabres games and he wouldn't have missed a Buffalo Bills game! He enjoyed playing cards and was an amazing chess player! Max joined Nativity of our Lord Church when they moved to Orchard Park in 1959. He took the kids to church on Sundays and made sure that the Kids had a faith-filled upbringing going to school at Nativity. In their last years, they stayed in Canada so they could be together in a house that was wheelchair friendly instead of going to a nursing home. They had four amazing 24/7 caregivers who have grown to be part of the family, Anida, Cheryl, Evelyn and Ruth. They did an amazing job and made it possible for them to live a comfortable, longer, full life! Mom and Dad couldn't have done it without you!!! We have plenty to be thankful for and will miss our parents very much, but we need to celebrate their amazing lives! We love and miss them! Arrangements by the JAMES W. CANNAN FUNERAL HOME. No visitation. Flowers gratefully declined. Mass of Christian Burial was held at Nativity of Our Lord Church.
