William "Bill" Mitchell

1955 - 2024

BRANDON – After a battle with cancer, William "Bill" D. Mitchell, 69, of Brandon, Iowa, died Sunday, September 1, 2024, at his home in Brandon surrounded by his family.
Visitation will be held from 2 until 6 p.m. on Sunday, September 8, at the Reiff Family Center – Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence, Iowa. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, September 9t at the funeral home in Independence. Inurnment will be held at West View Cemetery in La Porte City, Iowa, at a later date.
Bill was born on March 21, 1955, in Vinton, Iowa, the son of Donald J. and Mildred "Millie" L. (Wright) Mitchell. He was raised on a farm east of La Porte City and was a 1973 graduate of La Porte City High School.
On June 17, 1978, Bill married Janet "Jan" M. Trumm, at St. John's Catholic Church in Coggon, Iowa. They made their home together in La Porte City. Bill farmed with his parents for many years, caring for the land like it was his own. In 1989, Bill and Jan built a home in rural Brandon and raised their three children there.
In 1989 Bill started working for the Mental Health Institute in Independence (MHI).Bill worked at MHI for thirty-seven years and he finally retired in 2016.
He is survived by his mother, Millie Mitchell, La Porte City; his wife, Janet Mitchell, Brandon; his children: Lyndsey (Ryan) Anderson, Dysart, Iowa, Jill (Cory) Lange, La Porte City, and Ryan (Kelly) Mitchell, Independence; seven grandsons: Hunter and Carter Anderson, Caleb McGuffey, Taydom Lange, Easton, Cason, and Breckon Mitchell; two sisters, Connie (Larry) Wilken, Iowa City, Iowa, and Jackie (David) Beyer, Edan Prairie, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.
Bill is preceded in death by his father, Donald Mitchell.
