BRUCE LAPOINTE Obituary

BRUCE "SAM" LAPOINTE - WINOOSKI - Bruce "Sam" Lapointe died on Feb. 15, 2012, in Fletcher Allen Health Care, as a result of injuries he received from an accident on Feb. 6, 2012. He was surrounded by his loving family. Bruce was known to many as Sam. When he was seven or eight, his older brother, Butch, nicknamed him "Sam" after Slingin' Sammy Baugh, a famous Washington Redskins football player. Bruce liked the nickname so much he adopted "Sam" for his own. Sam was born on Oct. 6, 1948, to the late George "Zum" Lapointe and June Hovey Lapointe. He grew up in Winooski as a part of a very close knit family. Sam loved Winooski and was very proud to be a part of the fabric of the community. Sam graduated from Winooski High School in 1967, where he excelled at sports and was an outstanding athlete in both baseball and basketball. His passion was basketball and throughout his life he continued to engage in the sport as a dedicated coach and also as a high school referee throughout the state. Sam also held a black belt in Tae Kwon Do. In 1971, Sam graduated from St Michael's College with a degree in business administration. He worked for Cambridge Valve and Fitting as a sales representative for nearly 40 years. He loved his job and the Cadigan family who treated him as one of their own. Sam is survived by his wife and soul mate, Donna LeGrand Lapointe; his three children, daughter, Jennifer Lapointe Krause and husband, Michael, of Essex Junction, son, Joel of Winooski, and daughter, Heather Lapointe Sheppard and husband, Peter, of Colchester. He is also survived by his stepson, Jason Yates and wife, April, of Fairfield; in-laws, Don and Jan LeGrand of St. Albans; sister-in-law, Lisa LeGrand and partner, Sara Mann, of Bakersfield; brothers-in-law, Peter LeGrand and longtime partner, Imee Furstenberg, of Los Angeles, Calif., Paul LeGrand and wife, Donna, of Troy, and Andrew LeGrand and wife, Anna, of Fort Smith, Ark. Sam's five grandchildren were his world. His greatest joy was attending their school performances and sports events. Hannah Sheppard, Logan Sheppard, Lea Krause, Lily Sheppard, and Georgia Krause, will deeply miss their Sam. Sam also leaves behind his siblings, June Plant and her husband, Bob, of Winooski, Roland "Butch" Lapointe of Winooski, Michael Lapointe of San Francisco, Calif., and Kathleen Santerre and husband, Daryl, of Essex Junction; as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and several aunts and uncles. Sam also leaves a very dear, lifelong friend, Gerry Allen of Essex Junction. Sam was predeceased by his parents, George "Zum" Lapointe in 1994, and June Hovey Lapointe in 2010; in addition to several aunts, uncles, and cousins. Sam's smile and laugh were contagious. His gregarious personality was infectious. He left a lasting impression and touched the lives of anyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. Along with his family, Winooski has lost one of its biggest fans. We would also like to express our deepest gratitude to the ICU Staff at Fletcher Allen Health Care who selflessly made themselves available when we needed answers. They treated Sam like royalty during his stay. A Mass of Christian Burial and celebration of Sam's life will be held at St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Winooski on Monday, Feb. 20, 2012, at 11 a.m. In lieu of a wake, a reception will be held at the Knights of Columbus Hall in South Burlington immediately following the service. Arrangements are with the LaVigne Funeral Home in Winooski. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Sam's memory to: ICU FAHC Development Office, 111 Colchester Avenue, Burlington, VT 05401.

One of the classiest people I ever met...We were classmates at St.Michael's and became great friends.....Sam was a riot to be with and a man you could always count on. We drove to games, classes, dinners, etc laughing all the time....I drove to his service from Boston when he passed away. I was with him the night he met his wife....Rest in Peace Sam....you are not forgotten.

I can’t seem to move forward, that’s how special you were to me. Even after nine years there isn’t anyone else who can fill the void. I love you and miss you terribly.

Hi Dad,
Nine years. Nine years where everyday you are thought of. You are still very much here in our thoughts, our stories, our memories. The hole is still huge where you were.
I didn’t get to say this to you, but thank you. Thank you for setting an example of what a parent and grand parent should be. Thank you for being so present that there is no way that you can’t be a part of this life even if you aren’t here.
I can still hear your voice. I can still hear your laugh.
Until we meet again, you are loved and missed.

Same was unique, a gifted athlete, bright, cordial, competitive and faithful to his friends. We were in some of the same classes so we exchanged noted and thoughts often. We socialized together and I was with him the night he met the love of his life, Donna. He often chided me about my "Massachusetts" accent and I gave it right back with his Northern Vermont accent. I got to see Sam after college on my trips from Boston to Winooski as I traveled often to watch my youngest son play baseball when he was a student/athlete at SMC during the 2004-08 school years.

Same was special and often spoke of his wife and kids, whom he loved very much. When news of his passing reached me, I drove to Vermont just so I could attend his funeral services as it was important for me to say good bye to a terrific friend.

Sam,
It's been almost 50 yrs since we first met. We were the class of 67 and a big part of that class's collective heart is broken by your passing. It just doesn't seem right that you would be one of the first of us to go. You always made us smile. You and big John were my locker buddies for years. And you were always so kind to the shy, geeky girl I was. I have appreciated that kindness all of my adult life. Though I left home to venture out in the world, you were always someone I looked forward to seeing when I could get home. You made our reunions fun and the smile was again always there!! I think you would have been amazed at all the people who came to your service yesterday. I doubt seriously you had any idea how many lives you touched. My heart aches for everyone who loved you and I can only hope they take comfort in their memories, just as I will.
You are already so missed old friend; but, I'm counting on that big smile and hearty laugh to be waiting for the rest of us when we get to the other side. Rest easy knowing that for many of us, you made our worlds better places to be in and that you have left behind an incredible legacy.
Godspeed on this next journey Sam. I have the distinct feeling you'll never be far away!!

February 21, 2012

Bruce,
It is hard to know what to say at a time like this. I have so many memories of you going through my mind. Snapshots of my life both past and present. You are sure of yourself and smart, tough but generous, determined and successful too. All the many things that make you who you are. Not who you were, but who you ARE, because those things live on in Jennifer, Joel, Heather and their children, so you live on in them. That is something I know that you are VERY proud of.... That you left so fast is what makes the pain so surreal. I will miss that laugh. We will all miss that laugh. We will carry on as you would expect us too, but it will never again feel quite the same.
Until we meet again,

Liza Merrihew-Rixon

February 21, 2012

Bruce,
It is hard to know what to say at a time like this. You are in so many pictures in my mind past and present, different snapshots of my life. You are sure of yourself and smart, funny and tender, tough and yet generous. You are determined and successful ... so many different parts of you, that make up who you are... Not who you were, but who you ARE... because you live on in Jennifer, Joel, Heather, Hannah, Logan and Lily and Lea and Georgia and they have the gifts you shared. A legacy of love, which you have every reason to be filled with pride. That you left so fast is what makes the pain so surreal. I will miss that laugh :)
Until we meet again, and we will,

Liza

I happened to have been in VT attending my mother's funeral when I saw the article in the paper about Sam's accident. After the initial shock it brought back great memories of a time playing softball with a bunch of guys - many from Winooski. Ron Barcomb, Jerry Parot and Jack Brice are a few offering condolences above. Sam was the soul of the team as pitcher and always someone you wanted to be around. His father, Zum, umpired my baseball games in high school. I worked with, and played some softball with Butch at GE and my father was a friend of his uncle Ralph so the connection to the Lapointe family is deep and heartfelt. My deepest condolences to extended Lapointe family.

In the summer of 2010, I met Sam on one of his many walks at Colchester Airport Park. He took time to greet me enthusiastically with a big smile and talk with me and my son and his family. As vintage Sam, he made a point to make a complementary remark about me to make me look good in front of my family. As a player on Zum's first Little League team ever in Winooski, I have cherished memories of the entire Lapointe family. God Bless Sam and his family.

I was so sad to learn of Sam's passing. We were friends and classmates at WHS. After graduation, our paths rarely crossed. But every time I did see him, it was like no time had passed in between. Sam had the rare quality of making every person he met feel special… every time he saw them. My heartfelt condolences go out to Sam's family.

February 18, 2012

Dear Jenny, Joel, Heather, Mom, Aunt Kathy, Uncle Mike, Uncle Butch, Donna & all of our family,

I have so many fond memories of Uncle Bruce, as we all do...

I remember as a child, the countless times jumping on his bed @ Nana's with my sisters and cousins, while he blasted the Beach Boy's song, "Barbara Ann".We loved to do that:)

The trips to Norse's Beach then to Sadie's in Mallett's Bay for fries and creamees were almost a weekly occurrence, and waiting for him to drive up to pick us up was the hightlight of our weeks during the summers... One summer, he even took us with a cast on his hand...he would still go into the water with us, holding his arm in the air, and tossing us up with the other...I will now tell you that he had a tendency to "straighten the curves" on the winding parts of Mallett's Bay Avenue:)(totally Bruce...can you picture it?!).

I know that all of us will hear that unique, boisterous laugh of his and see that beaming smile when we think of him...he truly lit up the room.

I'm sorry that we couldn't be there with you all during his last days...please know that we were there, and will continue to be there with you in Spirit, as his life is celebrated on Monday.

Love you, Uncle Bruce...we will miss you so much. You're now one more Angel to watch over all of us,

Jody, Pat and the Twins

So sad to hear of Bruce's passing. I first met him as a basketball official working our games. I had the pleasure of coaching his daughter Heather in high school and found him to be supportive and fun to be around. The joy of seeing his kids play and at just being in an athletic environment were always obvious to all. A true loss, but also many great memories for all who knew him.

Words seem inadequate to express the sadness we feel.
I can still vision Bruce as a young boy playing sand lot baseball on the vacant land near his parent´s home.
I will always remember fondly the experiences we had playing baseball and softball, his friendly personality and athleticism.
Two summers ago was the last time we saw Bruce; he had that big grin on and was eating a healthy ice cream at Ray's Sea Food, glad to have talked to him.
Please except our sincere condolences to the LaPointe family.

We are so sorry to hear of the accident and the passing of Bruce. We knew him casually over the years as “Mr. Basketball” when he was involved in Colchester youth basketball. He was someone with a quick smile and always good for some friendly jesters. It was just only a few weeks ago we briefly got reacquainted with him at a local Winooski gym, he was as friendly as ever. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Lapointe family during this time of your loss.

I was very sorry to read of Sam's passing. I got to first know him when my wife and I lived in Winooski many years ago, and got a chance to play softball against him way back in the 70s. He was a great guy, and a tremendous athlete. He was among many great ballplayers from Winooski, including many members of the Lapointe family.

Sam was part of the fabric that makes Winooski such a wonderful city, and I know he will be missed greatly there, and in the Greater Burlington area.

I will miss crossing paths with him, and catching up on the sports scene. He was one of the "good guys"..

RIP, Sam...

I have known the Lapointe family my entire life. A wonderful family brought up by Zum and June - two of the best people on earth. I am heartbroken that Bruce has left them. It was just too soon. My love to all of you.

I have known Sam for over 50 years and I am in shock at his passing. Words are meaningless and cannot begin to express my deepest sympathies to Sam's family. He was a terrific person and wonderful friend. All I can offer are my prayers and deepest regrets.

May Sam's memory and the love of family and friends comfort the family during this difficult time. Sam was a "one of a kind" man's man. A great athlete, kind and gentle human being that always had a big smile and warm greeting. He will be missed.

To the entire Lapointe family, May God bless you at this most difficult and sorrowful time.
My thought's and prayers are with all of you.
I have wonderful memories of playing baseball and softball with Sam and Butch and all the Winooski boy's as Sam would call us.
We were like family ,always played hard and celebrated hard too after the games.Sam loved to win and he was such a tough competitor, something you are born with if you are from or ever lived in Winooski.
Sam thank you for all the great times and memories .
I am proud to call you my friend.
Rest in peace my friend.
