JOHN SIMKO Obituary

JOHN JOSEPH SIMKO MILTON - John Joseph Simko, 45, of Milton died peacefully surrounded by his family on Oct. 23, following a 2 1/2 year battle with pancreatic cancer. John was born in Philadelphia, Pa. on May 11, 1964. He graduated from West Catholic High School in Philadelphia and received both a BA and Masters in Education from UVM. He was on the UVM basketball team from 1983-1986, and was captain of the team in 1983. He earned an MBA from the University of Phoenix. John started his lifelong career in education at Burlington High School as an Alternative Educator and JV Basketball Coach. His interest in business and finance led him to a brief stint at Putnam Investments. However, he eventually returned to his love of teaching children. He became a Special Educator at BFA Fairfax, and finally at Swanton Central School. It is there that he found himself surrounded by a wonderful group of friends and colleagues who continued to support him throughout his illness. Their generosity and kindness is unmatched. He was also a Library Trustee for the Milton Public Library, as well as a Eucharistic Minister for St. Ann's Parish in Milton. On Sept. 18, 1993, John married Veronica and together they made their home in Milton. In 1996, they started their family with the birth of their first child, Maxine. Three and a half years later, they welcomed their second daughter, Ella. After the birth of their third daughter, Lena, John spent two years as a stay-at-home dad, where he enjoyed watching his daughters grow. He could always be found with a group of children around him, whether his or not, laughing and being silly. He was a presence wherever he went, a gentle giant whose love of humor and puns would keep everyone around him laughing. His love of education extended to home, where he took an active interest in all the kids' schoolwork and activities. John found teachable moments in everything around him. Throughout his life, John was an avid, if not fanatical, golfer. His favorite part of the game was sharing his knowledge of the sport with his friends on the course. He could be found most mornings, rain, snow or shine, heading out to the golf course. He is survived by his wife Veronica Valz and daughters Maxine, Ella and Lena Simko; his parents John and Rosanne Simko of N.J.; his brother and sister-in-law Francis and Diane Simko of N.J.; his sister Denise Ewing of Maryland; mother and father-in-law Rita and Bob Smith and family of Addison; and Joe and Janet Valz of Florida; his sister-in-laws and their husbands, Jennifer and Jason Hatch of Ferrisburgh, Audrey and Eric Jackson of Hermon, Maine; and many nieces and nephews. John's family feels blessed by the generosity of time, energy, love and support that they have received from their many friends, neighbors and colleagues throughout his illness. Special thanks to Christian Thomas, MD and Shelly Bonnette, RN at VCCM, and Jen and Rick Dooley for their amazing love, care and kindness. John had a love of books and his local library. For those who wish, memorial contributions may be made to Friends of the Milton Public Library, c/o Milton Public Library, 39 Bombardier Road, Milton, VT 05468. Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009, from 5 to 8 p.m. with a Vigil Service at 8 p.m. in the Minor Funeral Home, Route 7, Milton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Saint Ann's Catholic Church, Main Street, Milton with Friar John Feltz, celebrant. Burial will follow in the Milton Village Cemetery. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.minorfh.com

Dear Veronica and the rest of the Simko family,
I recently heard this shocking news and I am deeply saddened by John's death. I extend my deepest sympathy to you and you entire family and friends during this difficult time.
I played on the University of Vermont basketball with team with John in 1983. On the team, he was a very lovable guy and one of the few young people in sports at that time that possessed a combination of strong values and incredible soft skills. Although I lost contact with him after I graduated and went to play basketball in Europe, I, as well as 1000's of others if not more, will always have fond memories of greatness in John. Once again, please accept my condolences. Peter Cole UVM 1983

Dear Veronica, Maxine, Ella and Lena:

May Peace and God be with you at this time. I know there are no words to fully comfort you but you will be in my prayers.

Ella and my daughter Madeleine go to gymnastics together. Please let us know if you are in need of anything: carpooling, prayer/mass request, a homemade meal, anything.

I cannot imagine what you are going through right now but I am sure in your situation just having a support system would be helpful.

May God Bless You All,

Valerie

Dear Simko family,
John worked with our department beginning in 1988 in our afterschool and summer programs for a few years, and he was one of the best employees I ever supervised. He was always professional and engaged with the children under his care. He also worked very well with challenging youth.
May God Bless.

To John’s Family,

Although we only knew John for a short time, he quickly became a wonderful friend and colleague. We cannot express the extent to which we enjoyed working with John in Swanton. When John would enter my class, every child would smile and look at this “giant”. One might think that the children had never seen a man quite so tall! John would patiently stand there with a huge smile on his face and his hand held high so that each child could jump (really jump!), and give him a “high five”. Not only was John a “giant” to the children in a physical sense, he was also a “giant” in their eyes because he loved his students… every single one… and they loved him back.
John often spoke of his deep love for his family and his God. He was clearly a man of great faith and his walk with God was an example to all of us. It has been an honor to know and work with John. We will miss him and know that one day we will see him again in Heaven.

In Sympathy,
Jeanice and Carlo Micheli
