MARILYN STETSON Obituary

MARILYN FALBY STETSON - BRISTOL - Marilyn Falby Stetson passed away on Aug. 1, 2012, at her home in Bristol. "My parents, Eleanor Weston and her husband, Sidney Nelson Falby, led an idyllic small town life in Charlotte. I, Marilyn Falby, was born May 25, 1936, and was joined by my twin brothers, Frank and Fred, in 1938. Young brother, Richard, joined this raucous crew in 1947! I was so lucky to have been a child of the '40s, who enjoyed country life, including Nelly, my childhood horse, who became my surrogate 'sister' on my ninth birthday, a day that I never forgot. In Charlotte at the time, after 8th grade, the pupils were tuitioned to other high schools, so I went to Edmunds High School in Burlington when all the Falby's moved to the city. Changing from the 'sticks' to the city was quite traumatic, but I met and loved many new friends before I graduated from high school in 1953. It surely seems that my adult life and true love began with Bob Stetson, a hard-working UVM student I met at Oakledge Manor in Burlington on Lake Champlain the summer that I became a 'frosh' at UVM. This romance endures to this day, even beyond 56 years. Our children and their families have been our lives, our loves and our rocks as we negotiate The Golden Years: Jeff and Mary (Lindy, Jen, and Rob); Sally and Jim Hurlburt (Marissa, Justin and Jeremy); Dave and Sylvia (Kelsey and Danica); Dan and Angela (Megan and Jessica). What a vivacious, spirited, and wonderful addition of grandchildren were blessed to Bob and me! Our Megan and Jessica Stetson are the daughters of Diane Larrow. We are also joined by Bob's sister, Cynthia and her husband, Bob Page, as well as Cynthia's children, Deborah, Mark and Sharon. Their children add to our nephews, nieces and grandniece as well. And then there is my Monkton family, which has continued my support, truly from its onset when I became the third grade teacher in 1971 (at $6,100 per year!). The 27 years teaching in Monkton were happy ones. No town, students, nor staff at that time has ever meant more to me. In these last 14 years, I have leaned on my oncologist, Dr. Paul Unger. His skill and blue eyes (always wearing, at my request, the 'blue' tie or shirt to match the days of my appointment!) were important to me. His staff over the years has been totally awesome. Addison County Home Health and Hospice, with Ann Gibbons and Beth Thibault in particular, have always been by my side. Julia Child, my lymphedema PT 'guru' became my advocate and friend. Cancer may not need to be a death sentence, but yet another journey to find a path to 'wear out, not rust out.' I have always tried to follow that path. In closing, I remember an old family favorite: 'The Lord is good to me And so I thank the Lord For giving me the SUN And the rain and The appleseed. The Lord is good to me.'" A colorful celebration of Marilyn's life will take place on Sunday, Aug. 12, 2012, at 2 p.m. at the Bristol Federated Church. The family will host a reception immediately following. In lieu of flowers, please bring canned food donations for the Bristol Food Shelf, or make a contribution to Addison County Home Health and Hospice.

The years fly by but you are always close to my heart. You lit up so many lives from your family to all the school children and their families. You were such a generous, caring and loving person and close friend. I'm sorry your time with us was taken before it should have but I cherish all the moments we had together!! God Bless you - I know you're looking down on us from Heaven.

Marilyn was a loving caring friend. She was always the first one with a card, a snack, a quick call or visit if someone was in need. I'll never forget the wonderful trips we went on. Over the past few years we went to Maine to the ocean. We talked, walked and ate homemade ice cream on the beach and just relaxed. Wonderful memories of a wonderful friend.
My love and prayers to you all.

I was a friend of Marilyn's during our teenage summers together on Thompson's Point. We lost track of each other after college, but she appeared at my Mom's funeral twenty years ago in Cornwall and we have maintained contact since. In recent years I have seen her on those rare occasions when I could get back to Vermont. I have been deeply touched by our conversations, grateful to her for reaching out to me and for being a graceful example of courage and humor as she confronted the challenges that ultimately took her from us. My heart is full, overflowing through my eyes, as I hold her and her loved ones in the Light.

Marilyn was an incredible inspiration to many. She was also a '2nd' mom, while attending UVM with Sally. I will miss her quick wit, illuminating smile, and contagious laugh. My family and I send our love to all of the Stetson clan.

Marilyn was a great teacher. She knew and loved her students and was a wonderful friend to parents. She was graceful, smart, funny, dedicated and a wonderful person. My life, and those of my older children who had her as a teacher are richer for the experience. She truly does live on in our hearts.

I was thinking about her just the other day as I watched a medal ceremony at the Olympics: She told me that she insisted every third grader learn the Star Spangled Banner by heart after watching some athletes stumble over the lyrics while on the podium.

We will always remember you, Marilyn.

To the Stetson Family,
I was in your mom's inaugural 3rd grade class at MCS. Mrs. Stetson has remained throughout the years "my favorite" teacher. I will never forget entering the classroom that first day. She had created a name balloon for each student that was attached to each desk with a pipe cleaner (to look like it was floating). Even then, I recognized the care in which she put into her teaching. So sorry for your loss - but her spirit lives on in all of the lives she touched.

So very sorry to hear of your loss. She was, indeed, a remarkable woman. Very recent conversation with a past MCS student indicated that she "would never have made it thru MCS without Marilyn -- her saving grace". Will always remember her sense of humor, even towards the end, and a most remarkable gathering of friends for a laughter-filled afternoon - never to be forgotten.

Hi Ma! That was my term of endearment for you. As you were like a mother to me ever since I started my teaching career in Monkton in 1972. Those were the "good ol' days"! I have never known anyone more loving, caring, sharing or selfless as you!!! Always thinking of others even when you yourself were in need. Of course there was the "devilish" side to Ma also with her constant pranks and tricks that kept us all laughing. I pray for your family as they grieve this terrible loss but am glad your journey is over. I love you and will miss your positive presence on this earth.
