Dear Grunberg Family,

I am the widower of Linda Bek Drewry, whom Dr. Grunberg treated at Norris Cancer Center in Los Angeles in 1991-1992. I have often thought about Dr. Grunberg since those difficult times. I remember him as a wonderful person and great doctor. He was very thoughtful, compassionate, and supportive. I am very sorry to read about his passing and hope that his family is doing well under the circumstances.

To Steve's wife and family:

My sincere and heartfelt condolences. I only just learned belatedly of his death this past weekend at an oncology conference. I was shocked. I knew Steve professionally for nearly 20 years. He was an authentic and deeply caring individual. The oncology community of Vermont and of the entire nation has lost a true "tzaddik."

Dear Mrs. Grunberg and family:
I just met Steve barely a year ago when he assisted me on a project I was working on. During that time he showed himself to be not only a wonderful man and excellent physician, but a loving and caring father who absolutley adored his family. He was so proud of his children that I remarked to my wife that I hoped to emulate him as my daughters grew older. I cannot imagine your loss but am sure you recognize that the world is a better place because of Steve. May you find comfort during these trying days and know only happiness in the future.

I just found out about Dr. Grunberg's passing from my friend and past co-resident. I am deeply saddened. I am now a physician at Dana Farber and got to know Dr. Grunberg as a resident at UVM. He was so engaging and captivating and made me want to go into oncology. I will never forget him, his laugh and twinkle in his eye when explaining to me everything I had to learn about oncology. He was kind, smart, and funny. I will miss him and my deepest sympathies to his daughters and his wife. He was and will always be in my heart and mind, a wonderful kind and caring physician and human being.

Dear Ms Grunberg and family,
I only heard of Dr Grumberg passing today when the hospital called me and I cried.
I was, according to him ,his longest surviving patient in Vermont.
Over the years we had gotten to know each other and the ckeck up times were less stressful. We could talk about something else beside the Disease.
We had in common children who wanted to work in the entertainment industry.
We talked about California, film schools and other topics totally unrelated to cancer.
My visits at Fletcher Allen will never be the same, I am dreading the next appointment.
He was a wonderful person,a great doctor, I will never forget.
My thoughts go to all of you , members of his family . I never met the younger generation but somehow got to know a little bit about them.I knew he was a great father too.
Adieu !

Dear Mrs. Grunberg and daughters - I am so sorry for the loss of your husband and father. He was my husband PJ's oncologist for the past 12 1/2 years. My husband "won the war" on cancer on Sept. 14th after five brain tumors- We know he is in perfect health again in heaven. Dr. Grunberg stayed positive for my husband at every appt. and would tell my husband "you are amazing or you are unique". My husband always looked forward to Dr. Grunberg's positive outlook at how they would proceed next and we knew he was always, always brainstorming anyway to help my husband. PJ was a Driver's Ed. Teacher and Dr . Grunberg would share with PJ how he was teaching his daughters how to drive. He was a leader and an incredible teacher for his "fellows"! Our prayers are with you and your family. God bless, Cindy Joubert

Dear Grunberg Family, We are so very sorry for your loss. Dr. Grunberg made our Mother's(Harriet) last two years of life so special, comfortable and because of his wonderful care and kindness we are forever grateful. She looked forward to her monthly "drips" and hearing of what his wonderful girls were doing...including what they were entering in the fair each year!! He was so loving and caring and made her days battling breast cancer that went to the bone possible. He made it possible for her to see her 3 grandaughters get married and meet her grandson's future wife. He also cared with love for our Mother (Dorothy) and our Aunt (Erma Dale) with his kindness during their battles with cancer. Our family will always remember your wonderful husband and dad for helping our family through such a challenging time. He was a very special Doctor and friend to us. Our sincere sympathy to all of his family. The Gary Nelson family and Al Gilbert family.

Dear Kelly and girls, I am so sorry for your loss. Thank you for sharing Steve with us. I worked with him in the academic office at UVM these past 13 years and know he will be greatly missed by all who know him. I pray that God will comfort you all and give you strength through the words of comfort you receive and with your memories of your dear husband and Dad.

Dear Grunberg Family,
I knew Dr. Grunberg as a pharmacist at FAHC. I would see you sitting in the Healing Garden on warm autumn days and pray for healing as I delivered his oral chemotherapy to his inpatient nurses. His contributions to the practice of oncology pharmacy we will never forget as they serve as the template for the proper use of anti-emetic supportive care. He was a learned man , excellent physician and kind teacher. I am very sorry for your loss.

To Steve's wife and daughters, my condolences on this difficult loss. I had the absolute pleasure of working with Steve on the Lyric Board and on the Finance Committee. Although I didn't get to know him well, he always impressed me with his intelligence, humor, and kindness. I always looked forward to seeing him. He certainly did what we all hope to do... to make the world a better and richer place. I will miss him, as I know so many others will as well. Good luck getting through this difficult period.

Dear Kelly, Liz, Kari, and Annie,
We feel so blessed to have known Steve. He was a wonderful colleague and friend. He was a "five-star" proud parent and husband. Hearing the joy in his voice as he spoke about his daughters, always warmed our hearts.
Our all time favorite local stage performance was Steve's rendition of Sitting Bull in "Annie Get Your Gun". I smile every time I think about it!

We pray that God's peace will be with you and sustain you through your time of grief.

September 25, 2013

Dear Grunberg family,
I am so sorry for your loss.
I saw Steve on a regular basis here at the Vermont Cancer Center for the last four years. As he was on his way to and from meetings and the clinic, he always took the time to stop and say hello, even asking me how an old wrist injury was healing. At monthly committee meetings, he would often bring up points that others had not considered, or he would play the devil's advocate to make a point. He was observant during those meetings, and when he spoke, he spoke with passion and charisma and a touch of humor.
Steve was a wonderful, caring, perceptive, intelligent person and an inspiration. I will truly miss him.
Your family is in my thoughts and prayers.
With love,

Dear Grunberg family,

I am so saddened to hear of Steve's passing. Steve was such a kind and good hearted person. I worked with Steve in his community theatre endeavors and was always struck by how much joy he took in the little things and how quick he was able to settle those tense moments near the end of a theatre production when so much still needs to get done. What an amazing individual!!!!! He truly had a gift. To be able to deal with the cancers of all of his patients and then only to learn of his own forthcoming demise. I didn't know him well, but of all the doctors at FAHC Oncology, Steve had the gift of listening with a big heart. He had been treating one of my own loved ones for cancer. When I saw the obituary, the shock came first, but then I felt a sense of peacefulness knowing that thousands of us have been blessed to know this man! He will not be forgotten. I want his family to know what a remarkable man he was and that he truly "lived" the way he was chosen to.
