James Short Obituary

James Melton Short

Corpus Christi - It is with great sadness that the family of James (Jim) Melton Short announce his passing of cancer at the age of 64 on Tuesday, June 1, 2021.

Jim was born February 27, 1957 in Ganado, Texas to C.B. and Leona Short, moving to Corpus Christi in 1962. In his teen years Jim had the opportunity to work several different jobs including bricklayer's helper bricking many buildings and homes around town and herding cattle on a working ranch. In 1975 Jim graduated from Mary Carroll High School and attended Ambassador College in Big Sandy, Texas from 1975 to 1977. One of Jim's proudest accomplishments while attending college was participating in the Coast to Coast bicycle trip in 1976. Jim kept his bicycle for years and loved watching the Tour de France. After college Jim took a job with Brown & Root in Houston as a pipefitter working for the company until 1989. During this time Jim met his wife Susan Donovan. They were married February 10, 1980 and had three children: James Jr, Amanda and David. In 1989 Jim returned to Corpus Christi with his family to work for his father C.B. Short in his business CBS Gas Measurement Services. In January 2000 Jim started his own business, JMS Gas Measurement Services. Jim had a strong work ethic. He worked six days a week resting only on the sabbath. He was preceded in death by his father, C.B. Short. Jim is lovingly remembered by his mother, Leona Short, three sisters, Carolyn (Bill) Coston, Laura (Ron) Weinland, and Mary (Mark) Patterson; his wife and children.

Jim will be remembered as a humorous and generous individual. His nieces and nephews fondly remember his jokes and genuine smile. His in-laws remember hunting trips and long conversations. His church family recalls him giving thought provoking sermons and chauffeuring church members to and from services. He read his bible daily and attended church every sabbath. Jim's faith never wavered throughout his illness. Jim was not a political man but he kept up with the news. He did not let differing opinions affect his personal or professional relationships. He was shrewd in his business dealings, but he also gave with his heart whether to his church, a school function, a community event, or a business venture. He took care of his family, working hard for many years to make sure they would be provided for should anything happen to him.

Memorial services to Celebrate James life will be held on Friday, June 11, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at Guardian funeral home chapel. Family will begin accepting friends and family starting at 1:00 p.m.

I wanted to send my love and prayers and sympathy to all of you. Jim was a wonderful and sweet guy. I remember him from our 1976 Bikecentennial that we cycled across the U.S.
I remember his sister Laura and her husband Ron whom I knew at Ambassador College. Again, my sympathy to all of you. We will see him again. Thank God for that. Olga (Otasevic) Jendrek

I am sad to hear of Jim's passing, I met Jim at AC after he returned from the Bike trip across the nation. He was always smiling and putting God first. He will be missed by all!

Dear Family, I was on the 1976 Bikecentennial that cycled across the U.S. Our team of riders was a huge group of cyclers, including 30 or so from Ambassador College and 50 other riders from age 14 and up that rode in 10 teams of 8 each. The AC students were the leaders. If I remember right, Jim was not only a pack leader, but also on bike repair, working every evening tirelessly to keep everyone's bike up and running. Jim was a quite student, but a smart guy and a sweet guy. He was in my class at AC, and I always thought he was nice. He had a huge smile and an easy, quick laugh. I am so sorry for your loss and know that you will miss him very much. I am so grateful that God's promises are true and faithful.
