Catherine MacRae Obituary

On October 10, 2023, Catherine M. MacRae (née Grumbine), aged 73, died at home in Annapolis after enduring many years with Alzheimer Disease. Born in Baltimore, Cathi grew up in Alaska, to which she never lost her profound attachment. As Young Adult Librarian at Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore and subsequently at Boulder Public Library, Colorado, she was a pioneer in library services for young adults as well as a noted columnist, book reviewer, editor and author. For many years she was editor-in-chief of Voice of Youth Advocates (VOYA), the leading journal for young adult librarians worldwide. Above all, she fervently advocated for the recognition of young people and their right to read unimpeded by censorship. Surviving her are her husband Robin Dunn and five younger siblings: Edward Grumbine of Bellingham, WA; Ann Fox of Vista, CA; Raymond Grumbine of Baltimore; Carol Grumbine-Hall of West Chesterfield, NH; Richard Grumbine of Putney, VT; and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, cousins and in-laws. Those who wish may donate in her honor to the Alzheimer's Association. A memorial commemoration will be held on a date to be announced.

While I only met Cathy through the stories Robin has told me, she was an incredible and inspiring woman. I am deeply saddened by her passing. I hope all of her friends and family find some comfort that she has profoundly effected so many people. Sending so much love.
