Colonel Thomann Obituary

Colonel Thomann died peacefully on November 25, 2020 in Parker, Colorado. He was born in Pawnee City, Nebraska on September 4, 1926. He was the son of Frank Charles Thomann and Grace Rachel (Smith) Thomann. He graduated from Yuma, Colorado High School in 1944 and was drafted into the United States Army in 1945. He served a brave and distinguished career for 32 years, 3 months and 10 days serving in WW II, Korea and Vietnam. He graduated in June 1949 from the University of Denver with a BA degree in speech and dramatics and a Regular Officer's commission in the United States Army on June 11, 1949. On December 27, 1949 he married Joyce Elaine Thompson in Castle Rock, Colorado. After retiring from the Army he became a very popular substitute teacher at Broadneck High School in Annapolis and taught several history courses at the Anne Arundel Community College. Chuck was active in music and theater at a very early age and used his talent in many ways through the years. In retirement he continued his love for music as a member of the Annapolis Chorale and an active member of St. Paul's Anglican Church choir. Charles and Joyce sponsored several midshipmen from the Naval Academy and were active in local politics and served on the Maryland State Elections Board for 7 years. They were devout Christians and active members of St. Paul's Anglican Church. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 61 years, Joyce Elaine Thomann in 2011. Charles leaves three adult children, Mr. Mark C. Thomann (Cecilia), Mrs. Debra Joyce Carroll (Jere) and Capt. Bradley G. Thomann, USNR (ret.)(Brenda), six grandchildren-Mr. Jere Carroll, Jr., Mr. David Carroll, Cdr. Mark Thomann, USN. Mrs. Heather Callender, Mrs. Brittany Dieker, and Mrs. Brooke Newton, RN. And six great-grandchildren. Burial with full honors will be held on Friday, February 26, 2021 at 3 PM at Arlington National Cemetery. Sending my deepest condolences and prayers to the entire family. The Colonel was my absolute favorite substitute teacher (BHS Class of 2001) -- so kind and inspirational. I have such fond memories of him and still treasure what he wrote to me in my yearbook Senior year.
