Daniel Piper Obituary

It is with great sadness the family of Daniel R. Piper, Sr., announce his passing at Florida Hospital at Connerton on the evening of April 12, 2018, after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson's Disease. He was 78 years old. Born in Corpus Christi, Texas, on November 6, 1939, Daniel was one of nine children. He graduated from Oxon Hill High School in 1959 and attended the University of Maryland on a full athletic scholarship where he graduated in 1965 earning a bachelor's degree in Labor and Personnel Management. Daniel then served as a United States Capitol Police Officer from 1964 to 1974, during which time he graduated from the University of Baltimore School of Law with a Juris Doctorate. In 1974 he became a Special Agent with the IRS's much lauded Criminal Investigative Division in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1991 he returned to Maryland to work in the national office of the IRS CID as a Senior Analyst whereby he retired in 1996. He then worked for the United States Department of State as a Special Investigator. He founded an international investigative firm, Piper, Piper and Associates, with his now deceased wife, Catherine Piper. An Expert Marksman, Dan also served as a firearms instructor in Quantico, Virginia, for agents from many agencies. He retired in 2011 after an impressive career of over 45 years of Government service. A tireless and dedicated worker, he was much loved and respected by his co-workers throughout his life. Always an athlete, Daniel was also a competitive golf and tennis player. Daniel Piper was a thoughtful and quiet man, known for his intellect and his keen sense of humor. He was often laconic, quick to listen, hesitant to share his opinions but more thoughtful and wise than his humble character would belie. His formidable presence was ever apparent, even into his waning years. Throughout his valiant fight with Parkinson's Disease, his brave and indomitable spirit was apparent to the end of his life. He will be profoundly missed and held in great esteem by all who knew him. Daniel was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Catherine Piper (née Billeaud), brothers Robert and Stephen (Sonny) Piper and sister, Jeanette Vetter. He leaves behind his wife of 7 years, Marilyn Piper of Spring Hill, Florida, son, Daniel Piper, Jr. of Annapolis and daughters, Ann Taylor (Gary Wolfe) of Annapolis and Erin Shiller (Scott), of Edgewater, MD, three granddaughters, Grace and Faith Taylor and Abigail Ruiz, two great-grandchildren, Kayleigh and Beauregard Hays and siblings Bill Piper of Asheville, NC, Eve Johnson (Jim) of Yorktown, IN, Brady Piper (Carolyn) of Yorktown VA, Robin Yoder (Phil) of Lockport, NY, Tom Piper (Julie) of King George, VA and David Piper (Claudia) of Aztec, NM. A memorial mass will be held at St. Mary's Church, 109 Gloucester St., in Annapolis, MD, on Saturday, May 12th at 9:00 AM.

May God hold you in the palm of his hand, and bring you comfort to ease your sorrow. Big Daddy was such a warm and loving soul! Though I know you miss him dearly, he is with the Angels now, and will watch over you, always. Much love and big hugs to all.
