Frederick Karkowski Obituary

Dr. Frederick Joseph Karkowski, 57, of Columbia, MD passed away on October, 15, 2020. A graduate of Pensacola Catholic High School, Fred went on to receive a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from Florida State University in Tallahassee. He subsequently earned a medical degree from the University of Miami School of Medicine. Dr. Karkowski completed his medical residencies at Biloxi Air Force Base, St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital and Tulane University. He went on to work in private practice in internal medicine in Savannah, GA and Annapolis, MD. He enjoyed teaching residents at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, MD. Fred battled chronic illness from very early on in his adult life. As a physician, this lent him keen empathy for the needs of his patients. In his last professional role, he served as a staff physician at Patient First in Columbia, MD where his patients and colleagues often spoke of his remarkable warmth and compassion. Simply put, Fred loved the water. When time allowed, he enjoyed boating, wakeboarding, and most of all surfing. This love began in his hometown of Pensacola, and carried forth throughout his life. Fred also enjoyed being a creative cook, an enthusiastic tai chi student and a joyful guitar player. Fred's dearest love was family. He is survived by his cherished wife of 25 years Katy and their children Sam and Fin - who have always been the steady center of Fred and Katy's lives. Fred was preceded in death by his parents Zigmund and Mary Jo, and his brother Michael. In addition, he is survived by his brother Rick (Michelle, Matt and Jake), his uncle Fred (Donna), his sister-in-law Yvonne (Nici, Jake, Erika, and Lucas), his parents in-law Paula, John, Joan and Chris, his sister-in-law Jenna (Kevin, Ruben and Logan), and his brother-in-law, Brad (Jill, Zander and Cass). A virtual gathering of family and close friends will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, his family asks for donations to the Lupus Foundation of America, the National Kidney Foundation and The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Fred was my roommate at FSU. After an epic adventure together to Hawaii he went on to medical school and I went to law school. I was reminiscing a few days ago about that time in our lives and was going to lift the phone to call him and see if we could meet somewhere and just catch up. I wanted our families to meet.
I wanted him to know that time and maturity had finally turned me into that liberal thinking person he always was and I thought I wasn´t. Not to be. I´m heartbroken today after I googled his name to find him. Rest In Peace buddy!

I knew Fred in high school and I remember him as a thoughtful, smart, funny kid who hung out with my little brother. I’m glad he had such a lovely life and my heart goes out to his family.

Best doctor at Patient First. While I don't know "Dr. K" personally but he was my doctor during all my visits. He cared. I always made sure to book my appointments on his schedule. He was always available via phone. We spoke about family and work. The last time we briefly spoke was in May 2020 via phone for a refill. Life is strange and unpredictable. He will be missed dearly. RIP "Dr. K".

He and I were 'The K Team' on our trauma surgery rotation, our first rotation in our first clinical year of medical school. He was such fun to work with, and always a consummate professional. Praying for comfort for all of his family and friends.

I worked with Dr. Karkowski since his first day at Patient First. Anyone who worked with him knows that he was an incredible physician who truly cared for each and every one of his patients. He treated every staff with a warm heart. He will always be remembered and forever missed. Praying for his family.

Hello,
My name is Liz Wilkins (Bourgeois) and I carpooled with “Freddy” and “Ricky” back and forth to St. Paul’s. My brother sent me Fred’s obituary just this morning and I am just heartsick for his family. I have very fond memories of those days packed in the car going to school. I always knew that Fred would do something great with his life. Even as a kid, I remember him being brilliant. My mother used to say that he was going to be a doctor and she was right! I remember Mr. and Mrs. Karkowski very fondly as well. My heart goes out to his wife and children and to his brother and his family. I am so very sorry for your tremendous loss. May God richly bless you and bring back loving memories of a life spent together. God is the lifter of our heads and He is close to the broken in spirit. Praying for you all as you go through this extremely difficult time.
Fondly,
Liz Wilkins Bourgeois
