Marc Zisselman Obituary

61 years of age, of Philadelphia, passed away suddenly on December 30,2020. Marc was the loving husband to Pamela (Mattoon) Zisselman, devoted father to Heidi M. Zisselman and Robert S. Zisselman and cherished brother to Wendy (Zisselman) Mamberg and brother in law to Todd Mamberg. Marc was born in NYC and raised in Scarsdale, NY. He attended Scarsdale High School where he excelled at soccer, track and academics. Marc attended college at the University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 1981. While at Penn, Marc began his life long love for Philadelphia and developed close friendships that lasted his lifetime. Marc's friend, John Reiss, says "Marc understood people like no one I ever met. He had an amazingly effective non-threatening way of helping you." Marc attended New York Medical College, graduating in 1987. Residency was at Albert Einstein/Montefiore Medical Center and he was Chief Resident North Central Bronx Hospital. Following residency, Marc returned to Philadelphia in 1991 and began his career in Geriatric Psychiatry and teaching at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. He was an Instructor then Assistant Professor at Jefferson Medical College until 1996 at which time he became Associate Professor and Director, Division of Geriatric Psychiatry at Temple University School of Medicine. In 2006, Dr. Zisselman started work at Albert Einstein Medical Center, Philadelphia, serving as Associate Chair, Department of Psychiatry and Director of the Division of Geriatric Psychiatry. Michael Vergare, MD., Professor and Chair Emeritus, Dept of Psychiatry Thomas Jefferson University., Marc's mentor, colleague and friend at Einstein says of Marc, "I relied on his clear vision as a professional colleague and friend and his presence enriched our lives and inspired all who knew him." In 2015 Dr. Zisselman and his family moved to Annapolis, MD and he became the Medical Director of the Geriatric Service line at Sheppard Pratt Health System in Towson, MD. Steven Sharfstein, MD, President Emeritous of Sheppard Pratt Health System describes Marc as a "superb clinician, his work with seriously ill geriatric patients exemplary and his compassion and understanding extended to the staff who adored him." The pull of Philadelphia was too much and in 2019, Dr. Zisselman and his wife returned to Philadelphia and Jefferson Hospital/Jefferson Medical College where he was an Associate Professor and Psychiatrist on the Hospital Consultation-Liaison Team at the time of his death. Kiera Chism, MD, Marc's colleague at Jefferson says "Marc's colleagues depended on his heroic work ethic, calm mentorship, engaging anecdotes and most of all his solid friendship." Marc's love for his career was only eclipsed by his love for running, friends and family. He started running marathons in college and was once a guide to a blind runner during one NYC Marathon. Friendships were forged along the Wissahickon trails. Every weekend morning for the past 25 years, Marc met his running friends at Valley Green to run the trails. Marc was an official at his beloved Penn Relays for 28 years, first serving as a shot put official and then a relays timer eventually becoming Chief Timer in 2001. Dave Johnson, Director of the Penn Relays states "Marc had the rare quality of being an expert at his craft and simultaneously shedding his ego…one could not find a better example of the quintessential Chief Official". Marc's greatest joy was being with his family. Nothing made him happier than running or hiking with Pam, Heidi and Robbie, Robbie's fondest memories are running road races and attending Sixers games with his Dad. Heidi recalls her father's wise counsel whether about rowing, an academic paper or her career as a naval officer. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations in Marc's honor be sent to the National Alliance on Mental Illness at NAMI PO Box 49104 Baltimore MD 21297 ((donate.nami.org) or to "Friends of the Penn Relays" mailed to Penn Relays 219 S. 33rd Street Philadelphia PA 19104-6319. A celebration of Marc's life will take place late 2021, along his favorite running path in the Wissahickon, when gatherings will be safe. www.goldsteinsfuneral.com

Mark was one of the best people I ever met. Well educated and highly distinguished in his profession, he always had time for his friends on the Wissahickon who enjoyed his company almost every weekend. I remember with great fondness and respect every time I go there.

Ziss was one of the best men you´ll ever have met.

We were friends from early on in high school sharing the nervousness of the starters gun in a track meet, and the friendship of long runs at twilight and an occasional dribble post run!

A great man.

My friend.

I was a classmate, teammate, and friend of Marc at Penn. He was just one of the sweetest human being you could have ever met. He truly did love the Penn Relays and running for the great Penn track teams of our era. As a relays official myself for nearly 30 years, I always looked forward to catching up with him the last weekend in April. He always had a calming, warm influence on everyone near him. My condolences to Pam, Heidi and Robbie and the rest of his family. He will be missed with great affection.

My deepest condolences go out to the family of Dr.Zisselman, a “Top Doc” at Einstein who helped our family immensely to understand my Mom’s mental decline after surviving a serious illness. He was a kind, compassionate, and a gentle soul. He taught my Dad and us daughters how to talk to, and care for my Mom with dignity. May his memory be for a blessing.

I knew Dr. Z from the Crisis Walk-In Clinic at Sheppard Pratt where he would see outpatients. In just a short time of knowing him, Dr. Z stood out as a phenomenal clinician who cared deeply for his patients. On every interaction he showed patience, clinical expertise, and caring. Future blessings to all of his family and friends.

Dear Dr. Pribitkin,

I am writing to commend Dr. Marc Zisselman. Dr. Zisselman has always exemplified the epitome of outstanding clinician qualities: core expertise and competency in his field; a passion for patient care; extraordinary listening skills; respect; interest and empathy for me as a patient.
Especially now, when time is a most precious commodity for all physicians, Dr. Zisselman has always been very generous with the time he spends with me during office visits to ensure my overall wellbeing, and on the phone.
I have had medical problems since becoming Dr. Zisselman’s patient and he has taken every one as a challenge. He is detail oriented and reviews my medications, and changes made by other physicians carefully. Dr. Zisselman is up to date with modern medicine in fields such as neurology and sleep medicine. He consults with my primary care physician frequently.
I feel first and foremost that Dr. Zisselman is my ally. His upbeat attitude, serious detailed approach to my care, and genuine concern for me, not just as a patient, but as a unique individual is extremely commendable.
Dr. Zisselman is trying to help me find a psychologist for talk therapy. He takes the initiative to phone to see how I am doing even when I don’t phone him for a call back. He returns calls in an expeditious manner, and is never too busy to assist me with any administrative needs that arise. Dr. Zisselman joins every appointment at the end and confers with my present psychiatrist before the end of every appointment.
I feel very fortunate to have Dr. Zisselman as my physician. It is often stated that one person can make all the difference and in my experience, Dr. Zisselman is that ONE.
Sincerely,

Doneda Lederer

I was saddened to learn of Dr. Zisselman’s passing. He came to Sheppard Pratt to take over as medical director of the geriatric psychiatry department following the tragic passing of the previous director. "I am sorry, but I have no words for this moment, so I prefer to let you know that I was blessed to work with Dr. Zisselman throughout my entire fellowship year and to have him as a colleague upon completion of my training. I must say that he was a great psychiatrist, an excellent mentor but an exceptional human being. I enjoyed every day working with him and seeing patients together. He was more than supportive and gave me his wise advice, full of peace and joy. He was a light for us in our psychiatry department. I let him know that most of the residents and myself included, wanted to be like him when we grew up. It is true, Dr. Z will always be our role model.

Those we love don't go away; they are always beside us.
