Gordon Brown Obituary
Gordon L. Brown, age 88, of Springfield, IL, passed away peacefully on April 19, 2025. Born on March 1, 1937, in Ft. Wayne, IN, Gordon lived a life rich in family, music, education, and community service.
A gifted and passionate musician, Gordon's early years were spent performing with jazz bands from 1955 to 1959. His love for music and dedication to education led him to earn a bachelor's Degree from Northern Illinois University in 1959, a master's degree from the University of Illinois in 1964, and a Doctorate from Northwestern University in 1970. He shared his talents as a music teacher from 1959 to 1968, before embarking on a distinguished career with the State Board of Education from 1972 to 1994.
Gordon married the love of his life, Nancy Decker, in 1962, and together they built a family filled with love and devotion. As an adoring husband, a faithful provider, and a dedicated father to Greg, Scott, and Beth, Gordon's family was at the heart of all he did.
His commitment to his community was evident through his involvement with Friend in Deed, Citizen's Club, as a St. John's Hospital Samaritan volunteer, the Springfield Choral Society, and as a member/director of various church choirs.
Gordon was known for his intellect, generous and witty nature; always friendly and kind to everyone he met. He was described as a man of substance and an endearing smart-ass. He epitomized what an awesome Grandpa should be. Gordon's faith journey crescendoed when he trusted in Jesus on May 6, 2017, after living 48 years as a nonbeliever in God.
He leaves behind his beloved wife, Nancy; children, Greg (Margaret) Brown, Scott (Cyndi) Brown, and Beth Brown; sister, Sally (McCollom) Shepard; and brother, Jim McCollom.
