Dennis Quinney Obituary

Dennis Elwin Quinney was born at St Mary's hospital, Pierre, South Dakota on November 20, 1949, to Amanda (Bartling) Quinney and Donald Quinney. On August 19,2025, he fell at his home in Monmouth, Oregon and sustained a head injury from which he did not recover.
Dennis grew up in East Pierre in the days when neighborhood children played outside from after breakfast until the noon siren called them home for a quick lunch, then back outside until supper time. When interrupted by the school year at Washington School, play resumed after school hours. Winter play included elaborate snow forts, snowball wars and challenging sled hills.
As a teenager, Dennis delivered The Daily Capital Journal to the State Capitol and other State buildings. He and brother Pat also shoveled snow for neighbors. They received $0.25 for sidewalks and $0.50. for shoveling the rare two-car driveway.
In 1963, the Quinney family moved to Redwood City California after Amanda's marriage to Mel McCoy. (Father Donald had died of cancer in 1960.) Dennis graduated from Sequoia High School, Redwood City, California in 1967. He attended Canada Community College, Redwood City, CA, but soon knew Vocational Training was better for him. Over the years, he worked various jobs as a mechanic on cars and equipment.
In 2000, Dennis married Loretta Meeds Kemper and the two moved to Sutherlin, OR. Loretta owned a used clothing and jewelry boutique and Dennis worked for an equipment rental business maintaining and repairing rental equipment.
Upon retirement, Loretta and Dennis moved to Monmouth, Oregon to be near Loretta's daughter Twyla. Dennis's last few years were a struggle with declining health for both Dennis and Loretta.
Dennis is survived by wife Loretta, Monmouth, Oregon, Stepdaughter Twyla (Heath) Lawson, Monmouth, Son Jason Brown (Andrea), Klamath Falls, Oregon, Siblings Donna (Jerry) Hendel, Fergus Falls, MN, Patrick (Fran) Quinney, Denver, CO, Michelle (Dave) Olivas, San Jose, CA, and Stepbrothers Jim and Bob McCoy. Many nieces and nephews are scattered about the country, and many Bartling cousins reside in Gregory County, South Dakota.
Dennis will be laid to rest in Riverside Cemetery, Pierre South Dakota. May he now rest in peace. A separate remembrance will be held in Oregon.

I met Dennis in late December 1970 when he visited Pierre. We enjoyed each other´s company and shared a love of Samoyed dogs. My deepest condolences go out to Dennis´s family.

Our condolences to Dennis´s family. I grew up in the same neighborhood near the King´s neighborhood grocery story, the neighborhood ice skating rink, Washington Elementary School, and yes, some great sledding hills. His brother Pat and my husband were classmates. Brent & Linda Dykstra

I knew Dennis when we were quite young.  Hung out with him a bit in the neighborhood.  Hadn't seen him in a few days so I stopped & knocked on the door.  I was informed he had moved.  I Remember being disappointed. Never saw him again.  Thought about him periodically when I drove up Jefferson Street.
It was good to read about him.  My condolences.
