Edward Walter Hergett 1932 - 2025
Edward Walter Hergett, a longtime resident of Belfry, Montana, passed away at the
age of 92 in Billings, Montana on August 6, 2025 with his son Steven Hergett at his bedside.
He was born on September 27, 1932 to John and Elizabeth (Stieber) Hergett at Youngs Point, west of Park City, Montana, and baptized on December 14, 1932. The family moved to the Belfry area in 1941 where he farmed with his father John Hergett and brothers William Hergett and Ernest Hergett. He was confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church on June 6, 1948 in Belfry. He graduated from Belfry High School on May 26, 1950. On March 15, 1955, he entered the Army serving as an artillery mechanic in Okinawa and Japan until March 8,1957.
On June 23, 1957 he married the love of his life, Dorothy May Conrad at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bridger and was blessed with 68 years together. When they retired from the farm they moved to Bridger, Montana in 1994.
He was a lifelong faithful member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Belfry, serving in many positions there. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Laurel Co-op Association.
He is survived by his wife Dorothy May (Conrad) Hergett; his children Duane
Hergett; Steven Hergett and his wife Teri; Sandra (Hergett) Douglas and her husband Eugene; and Paul Hergett. He is also survived by his brother Ernest Hergett; as well as grandchildren David Hergett; Mitchell Hergett and his wife Hannah Bergman; Christopher Hergett; Brittney Thompson and her husband Miles; and great-grandson Daniel Hergett. He is also survived by numerous nephews, nieces and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, brother William Hergett; sister Marian Reid, brother-in-law Raymond Reid, DMD; sisters-in-law Irene Hergett and Dora Hergett and niece Karen Hergett.
The family would like to thank the caring staff at TenderNest Assisted Living in Billings where Edward lived with his wife Dorothy for more than four years and the kind staff at Riverstone Hospice.
A funeral service for Edward will be conducted at 10:45 a.m. on Saturday, August 16, 2025 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 305 Pryor Avenue, in Bridger. Interment will follow immediately thereafter at the Bridger Cemetery. Following the graveside service all are invited to greet the family during a luncheon in the church basement. Smith Funeral Chapel of Red Lodge, MT has been entrusted with the arrangements.
