Fred Miller Obituary

Fred David Miller, 82, of Westminster, Maryland passed away on February 25th. He passed away in Timonium, Maryland while in hospice care. Fred David Miller was born in Homer, Louisiana to Will T., a sharecropper, and Lorenia Miller, a nurse, on August 8, 1940. He grew up with his only sibling, Sister Mary Lynne. As a teen, he worked with his father, who was a sharecropper, and attended Homer High School, where he played football for the Homer Pelicans. A local sportswriter coined the term "Iron Men" after the Pelicans, playing eleven starters and two subs out of 18 dressed for the game, outplayed a supposedly superior Bossier team. He graduated from Homer High School in 1958 after being a four-year football letterman. With multiple colleges offering Fred scholarships to come play for them, he eventually decided to attend Louisiana State University (LSU). At Louisiana State, Fred started for three years as part of the "Chinese Bandits", LSU's defensive team. By his second year he was captaining the Bandit defense. During this time, he met the woman that would be his wife, Charlene Coco of Marksville, Louisiana. They were married in 1963, and she became Charlene Miller. In 1963 LSU finished with a 10-1 record, including a shutout of Texas in the Cotton Bowl. Fred graduated with a Bachelor's in Agriculture on January 29, 1963. During that time, the National Football League (NFL) and American Football League (AFL) were competing against each other to acquire the best available talent, so Fred was picked in both drafts in 1962. He was selected by the NFL's Baltimore Colts in the 7th round and the AFL's Oakland Raiders in the 26th round. He eventually signed with the Baltimore Colts. The first game in Fred's rookie year was the only game he didn't start in his entire career with Baltimore. During his time with the Colts he won Pro Bowl recognition three times (1967 through 1969) and played in 3 world championship games: the 1964 NFL championship game against the Browns, Super Bowl III against the Jets, and Super Bowl V against the Cowboys. After a short run with the Washington Redskins, Fred retired from professional Football after the 1973 season. He once told a reporter, "Football is the reason I got an education. It's the reason I met many, many people. I've had lunch at the White House. I've met a lot of folks in politics, and movies, and everything else. It's been a good life. We've got four wonderful boys and seven wonderful grandchildren. My wife Charlene and I were married 40 years on February 2, 2003." They were eventually married a total of 54 years when Charlene passed in 2017. Fred had numerous careers in the Baltimore area after football ended, but his real love was his family and spending time outside working on the farm he purchased in Upperco, Maryland in 1973. By 1973, Fred and Charlene had four sons and had begun to purchase livestock to populate the farm, dubbed 'Angel Acres'. His sons would come to value this as one of the most important times they would experience, learning that hard work had rewards that would shape their adult lives. Some of Fred's biggest accomplishments were being an incredible father, husband, and friend. His sons knew him as the strongest man they'd ever known, and even as adults, still see him that way. He was always there for them through their ups and downs, and taught them how to survive in a world that can often be challenging. Being a kind and dependable father was of the most amazing traits Fred maintained, and he certainly did not disappoint when it came to wholeheartedly loving his family. His friends also knew him as an honest, straightforward, and true friend, willing to help out whenever and wherever it was needed. Fred spent the last several years of his life living with son, David, at his home in Westminster, Maryland before being moved to an assisted living facility in Timonium, Maryland. Fred was inducted into the LSU Hall of Fame for 1964, The Louisiana State Athletics Hall of Fame in 1990, and the Southeastern Conference Football Legends Class in 2010, and as part of LSU's Modern Day Team of the Century. Fred is survived by his sons, David, Danny, Jake, and Luke, and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in passing by his wife of 54 years, Charlene, and his granddaughter Erin, who passed in 2021. He was deeply loved, and will be even more deeply missed. There will be visitation at the Eline Funeral Home, 934 South Main Street, Hampstead, Maryland from 2 – 4PM and 6 - 8PM, Thursday, March 2, 2023. The funeral service will be held at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church, 2930 Hanover Pike, Manchester, Maryland on Friday, March 3rd, 2023 at 10:00AM. His family will be present to welcome loved ones. Donations can be made in lieu of flowers to Bridging Life Hospice of Westminster, Maryland.

Fred picked my friend and I up hitchhiking in Virginia late at night, we were going to the Great Smokies for backpacking the AT, we were 17 year olds, it was spring break 1972. Fred was towing an RV trailer and he stopped at a rest area and made my friend and I a dozen scrambled eggs, loaf of toasted bread and a gallon of milk. I asked if he was a football player because he was so big in the RV trailer, he told us who he was and gave us both a team postcard and autographed it. I still have it. RIP Fred and thank you for picking us up hitchhiking.

Fred David was a gentle giant both on the field and in his personal life. I was a couple years ahead of Fred in high school and was on the team that only won a couple of games the year prior to the Iron Man team and was lucky to have watched this great man grow up and become the great person he was. When he played for LSU on the defensive team he was recognized as a great leader and brought LSU to be recognized as a team that would always be remembered as one of the greatest teams ever. I will always remember being hit by him in an after school practice and Rembering him helping me get up after tackle and a gentle hug saying are you ok. Fred David was a great player and a greater person.

My earliest recollection of Fred was sitting in the stands at Memorial Stadium and hearing my Dad scream " That was Fred Miller!" after a QB was sacked. Later in my career in manufacturing I ended up working with Fred at Ward Machinery. What I remember most was when big problems came up and everyone was screaming and yelling Fred was calm and steady.... Looking for the right answer. The world needs more people like Fred

I wrote earlier but I remembered a very important incident in my life.
When I was 16 or so Fred was at my parents home. My mother worked for Fred´s father in law. A lot of history there but anyway he has his Super Bowl ring on.
He allowed me to put it on .. wow
small town boy 16 years old. With a Super Bowl ring. I had a idea to slip out for the night with the Super Bowl ring on my finger. Impress a few girls you know and guys .Fred was good guy but ring stayed with him.

Fred is a icon at LSU .. anyone who follows LSU football know´s (any age) the name Fred Miller !

Rest in peace ...

I shared with Jake almost twenty years after the event I remembered stringing popcorn with a needle and thread for the Miller´s Christmas tree while on the living room floor on the farm. We lived not far from each other in Upperco and still not sure how our parents knew each other. I was just there today visiting with dad as we deal with his health challenges at 83 and thought of the whole Miller family in these tough days. From the entire Martin family we send our deepest condolences.

I am so glad my husband just happened to see the obituary posted on a news site he visits. We only met your family in person a few times since we were always moving and didn't live close to y'all but we watched every game Fred David played once he became a Colt. He was a legend at our house. We always commented on how Howard Cosell always called him by name when other announcers might say the tackle was accomplished by "and many others." Mother died in October but before her death she enjoyed the conversations she had with Fred David on the phone. She was sad for him that Charlene had passed away before he did; she knew how much he missed her. And she always talked about how proud he was of his boys! Please know our family is lifting up your family in our prayers.

Fred and his wife Charlene and their sons, were our (James Armacost) neighbors and friends, in Upperco for some 50 plus years. It was Always a pleasure to see him. You would have never known he was a Football celebrity, he was always so down-to-earth. But for our family, it was an absolute pleasure and honor knowing him.
An inspiration to so many on and off the field, young and old, his memory will live on.
Our deepest sympathy to his sons and their families.

Thanks to Fred and his family for including my family in special events many years ago. Remembering the Easters on the farm. It was then that I met some Colt players that he kept as good friends. You could tell that Fred and Charlene loved the farm life. One example was their pet pig that shared their home. I will always remember Fred as a favorite Colt. Peace be with you. Joan Schaefer

Fred coached me at football camps in Virginia during the 70's. Never did I have someone take such an interest in my success, as he. He developed me technically but most importantly, he coached integrity and passion for the sport he loved. I remember one of his boys being there with him and how much pride and love he displayed towards him.
He was such a role model to all of us high schoolers during those summers. Rest in Peace. You truly made a difference in my life sir....

As a kid that was raised in Homer Louisiana and played for the Homer Pelican football team, I was well informed of the 1957 Homer IronMen. My father told me all about that team my whole life and how many great players came from those 18 men. But he had a favorite that he loved talking about and that was Fred David Miller. Being that I played 2002-2006, I was far removed from Fred David Millers playing days but every time I got to put on the purple and gold I always thought about the 1957 IronMen and how lucky I was to play on the same field as that great team. Only got to meet Fred David a couple times in my life. I was fortunate to be around when he made return trips to Homer to be honored with the rest of his teammates. It was like meeting a god, he was the pinnacle of success for a Homer football player. I say all this to say for a man I only met a couple times but heard story after story of his greatness, he had a profound influence on my life. I wish his family comfort and peace during these times and hope y´all find solace that Fred David Miller lived a very impactful life. I will never forget him and will tell the same stories to my two sons that my father told me and my brother about the great Fred David Miller. God Bless and Go Homer, Beat Haynesville!
