George McGee Obituary

George Harrison McGee passed away on Tuesday, February 13th, 2024, at the age of 94, surrounded by his family. He was preceded in death by his siblings, John M. McGee, Virginia McGee Numsen, Robert B. McGee and nephew Joseph W. McGee. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth (Betty) O. McGee, daughter Caroline Rose McGonigle (Scott McGonigle), Sarah Elizabeth (Sally) McGee (Mike Brey) and nephews Mark, Kenneth, Todd, Courtney and Graham McGee. George was born to the late C. Mark McGee and Dorothy Rose McGee on December 31st, 1929, in Baltimore, Maryland. He attended Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, and then entered into the Marine Corps. After being honorably discharged from the military, George attended Johns Hopkins University, where he graduated with a degree in electrical engineering. He went on to work for the Baltimore Gas and Electric Company, where he was employed for 42 years. George married Elizabeth C. Oakley on August 8, 1959, in Warsaw, Virginia. They lived in Baltimore briefly, before moving to Sykesville, Maryland, where they raised their daughters, and lived for almost forty years. George was active in his church, St. Barnabas Episcopal (Sykesville, MD), serving on the vestry and teaching Sunday school, and was also an expert dishwasher at the pancake dinners. He enjoyed crossword puzzles, gardening, woodworking and could build or fix almost anything. George rooted for the Baltimore Colts and the Baltimore Orioles (attending many games at Memorial Stadium), and later, the Baltimore Ravens. He read to Caroline and Sally when they were young, chaperoned school field trips, took them to Orioles games, went on sledding adventures, jumped in the waves on Ocean City vacations and played tag in the front yard. After retirement, George and Betty moved to Warsaw, Virginia, and lived on Betty's family farm in Westmoreland County. He was active in the Episcopal church there as well, attending both St James in Montross, and St. Paul's at Nomini Grove Rd. George served on the vestry at St.James, and again had the chance to practice his dishwashing skills. He participated in the yearly Richmond County fair as a jack-of-all trades, doing whatever was needed. In his final years, George moved to Annapolis, MD, to be closer to his daughters. He was surrounded by his family on his last day. In lieu of a service, George would like you to think of him when you plant your garden, enjoy a craft or cheer for your home team.
