George Motter Obituary

George W. Motter Jr. of Baltimore (via Taneytown) passed away on 11/1/23. The son of George Sr. and Anna Dundore Motter. A mere 69 years old. After Francis Scott Key High School where he excelled in sports, was stellar in the choral group and band (French horn), and simply slayed as Cpt. Von Trappe, he joined the US Navy and trained as a corpsman at Bethesda Naval Hospital. After discharge he came to Union Memorial Hospital, embarking on a 47 year-long career in helping others – gaining the moniker, "Mayor of UMH" and the friendship and admiration of all who knew him. With his ex-wife JoEllen (nee Brooks) he sired two of the best sons ever, Joshua and Jacob Motter (of whom he was most proud). He enjoyed competition. He loved sports, whether watching from his couch, coaching his kid's teams or participating himself. He could always swim the length of the pool underwater (of which he was second most proud). He could smoke his opponents in backgammon, pool, and Texas hold 'em. A fervent fan of all the local teams, the Orioles sure gave him some kind of great final summer (Thank you O's!). He loved the outdoors – doing yardwork (yes, actually enjoyed it), jumping waves at the beach, or playing golf in 95-degree weather (or 35-degree weather for that matter). While he was taken from us much too soon, he did have a chance to travel and enjoy life with his long-time girlfriend, Leslie Beard, who he leaves behind deeply saddened but all the better for having known him. Predeceased by his parents, he also leaves behind a family whom he loved. His sons, his brother David (and his wife Meg), sister Marianne (and her husband Bill), all their wonderful and talented kids, the Dundore family, the cousins and kinfolk – plus what seemed like a million friends. Arrangements for a Celebration of Life are being made. Refer to Rucks Funeral Home website for information and details. In lieu of flowers, you may consider a donation to the American Cancer Society in his name.

I just heard about George´s passing. I´m so sad. I worked at Union memorial for a combination of 15 years. George was my big brother during the early days when I didn´t know what I was doing. I left for 5 years and he was a warm welcome when I returned. I love you George!

I just received word from a coworker of George's passing, and I'm deeply saddened to hear of his passing. He was a character at work; always joking around and picking on me. He was a great friend and coworker, and I was blessed to have known him.

I had the pleasure of working with George as well as playing cards and golf. George was a great guy with a great sense of humor. George was great at his job and didn´t mind telling you about it. He truly made UMH a better place to work. He is missed.
