William Joseph "Pop Skip" Swopshire

1954 - 2023

William Joseph Swopshire (Pop Skip), 68, of Elkton, MD passed away on Monday, December 4, 2023. Born in St. Louis, MO on December 7, 1954, he was the son of the late Willie Mae Williams and Thomas and Bertha Swopshire.

Mr. Swopshire retired as a laborer from Chrysler Corporation after 30 years. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. An avid sports fan, especially golf and football, he also loved to cook, and listen to classic soul music.

Survivors include his children, William Swopshire, Jr. (Teisha), Lavern Hairston, Charlestine "Cherry" Thompson, Charles "Brubby" Thompson, Jr., Charlene Wilson (Clyde), Clifton Thompson, Sr., Shelby Hall (Jemaine), and Dee Shaw; grandchildren, Keion Swain, William Swain, P.J. Hawkins, L.J. Hamilton, Tobias Thompson, and Tawan Wilson; great-grandchildren, Trinity Swain, and Shaylee Swain; a host of other grandchildren and great-grandchildren; siblings, Frances Fulgham, Melva Williams, Phyllis Williams, Geraldine Stringfellow, Jacqueline Odenwald, Barbara Bogan, Stanley Williams, Leo Williams, and Johnny Williams.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his longtime companion, Mary E. "Cookie" Bowser; granddaughter, Shayla Swain; and great-granddaughter, Serenity Swain.

Celebration of Life will be held 11 AM, Thursday, December 21, 2023 at Hicks Home for Funerals, 103 W. Stockton Street, Elkton, MD 21921, with visitation beginning at 10 AM. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Le Bonheur Children's Hospital Foundation Department at P.O. Box 41817, Memphis, TN 38174-1817.
