Douglas Frago Obituary

Douglas William Frago, 77, of Louisa, passed away Tuesday, October 16, 2018.
Doug had a rich life filled with many personal and career adventures. He was born in Turlock, Calif., on October 29, 1940 and grew up in Livingston, Calif. He graduated from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, Calif., with a degree in Agronomy and spent two years in Guatemala as a Peace Corps Volunteer before returning to Cal Poly as an instructor of Crop Science.
Doug and Donna were married for 51 years and shared many incredible experiences. After farming sweet potatoes and almonds for 18 years in Livingston, Calif., Doug and Donna returned with their four children to Guatemala, where Doug was Country Director for Peace Corps.
After Guatemala the Frago family moved to Washington D. C., where Doug served as Peace Corps Director of International Operations. From there Doug held several positions with Peace Corps as Country Director in Uzbekistan and Moscow, after which he moved to the Department of Agriculture in the Farm Services Agency.
In 2005 Doug and Donna retired to the beautiful community of Blue Ridge Shores in Louisa, Va., where Doug spent his retirement happily gardening and making things grow, and was able to pursue his love of traveling the world, where flying was as important as the destination.
Doug was the beloved son of the late Bill and Emily Frago who lived in Atwater, Calif.
Doug is survived by his loving wife, Donna Frago; his four beloved children and their families, Amy Herstedt and her husband, Darren, Jennifer Beck and her husband, Kevin, Jim Frago and his wife, Kristen, and John Frago and his wife, Denise; he was proud of his five grandchildren, Jacob and Joe Herstedt, Patrick and Matthew Frago, and Aaliyah Whalen; and his sister, JoAnn Mires of Atwater, Calif.
He will be remembered by his many friends across the country; some old, some new-all loved and treasured.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, October 28 at Woodward Funeral Home, 200 Fredericksburg Ave. Louisa, Va. 23093
A reception will follow at 3 p.m. at the Blue Ridge Shores Community Center, 924 South Lake Shore Drive, Louisa, Va. 23093.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation be made to Louisa Volunteer Fire Department or Trevilians Volunteer Fire Department.
Our sincere appreciation to the Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center and University of Virginia Hospital staff.

Dear Donna, Don´t know if you´ll get this as it has been so long. You´ve been in my thoughts a lot lately and decided to call today but never had a phone number for you. I didn´t know Doug had passed until I looked on the web and found his obituary...a bit of a shock! Our hearts go out to you even though it has been so long ago. Hope you are doing well and the same for your family. Take good care. Fondly, Margaret and Dane

I was a very young girl when our family was neighbors with the Frago family in the early 1970’s in Livingston, CA. They crossed my mind this morning and I decided to search...I’m very saddened to hear of Doug’s departure...a good man. Rest in peace

Doug was a great friend and colleague while we served in Washington with the Peace Corps. In later years we maintained periodic contact, and I followed his activities and world travels mostly through Christmas letters. His dear wife Donna assumed my position at Peace Corps when I left there, and I have always held both the Fragos in high esteem. I will miss Doug. My sincere condolences to the family.

I met Doug in 2011 on one of his trips to the San Diego area and he was one of the nicest men I have ever met. We had a very nice bond since and he even called me to let me know how our times together were truly special. Thank you Doug and I will miss you pal. Kevin
