April 23, 1929 - January 28, 2024

Charlotte, North Carolina - Buck Blankenship, a life-long Charlottean, died on Sunday, January 28. He was 94.

Buck was the middle child of Mildred Hodges Blankenship and Albert Stowe Blankenship.

Buck captained the soccer team at UNC-CH and graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1951. He then served in the Airforce where he was stationed in West Palm Beach, FL. There he met and married the love of his life, Betty Jane Rogers. They were married 67 years until Betty's death in 2022. They were long time members of Park Road Baptist Church where Buck served as a deacon for many years.

Buck was an innovator who recognized the potential of computing to revolutionize business and founded Data Processing of the South in 1957, which he later sold to Electronic Data Systems in 1982. During those years he was active in and chaired the Association of Data Processing Services Organizations, the industry's worldwide trade organization.

Buck was very active in the community, including chairing both the local Board of Directors of Habitat for Humanity and Habitat International, and he helped lead the Jimmy Carter Work Project in 1987 that built 14 houses in Charlotte's Optimist Park. He was a longtime active member of Charlotte's Lions Club.

Buck is survived by his sister, Carol Blankenship Gardener of Winston Salem, two daughters, Carol Blankenship Cramer and husband, Mark of Sunset Beach, NC, Susan Blankenship Nichols and husband Scott, of West Chester, PA, five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

A service will be held at Park Road Baptist Church on Saturday, February 3 at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, a donation to Park Road Baptist Church, 3900 Park Road, Charlotte, NC 28209 is welcome.

Mr. B was a very fine employer who took the time to listen to his employees and respond with concern and compassion. A great leader.

Halloween Day 1983 I got hit by a truck in NYC while having the best day of my short-lived career as a bike messenger- Buck was in town finalizing things with Mr. Perot- He came to see me in the indigent ward at St. Vincents Hospital- with his eternal calming nature/ reassurance and existential wit/ I had come close to the great beyond days before-It remains one of the kindest experiences I´ve ever had- but it was just one of countless evidences of his sincere care for fellow humans. He helped everyone get along - especially at PRBC!

Buck was a great leader. He listened, recognized and respected other´s opinions and shared his thoughts in that soft calming voice. And usually got his way. Lol
He is missed.

Buck and Betty were two of my all-time favorites at The Sharon and I am so grateful that I got to know them. I will always fondly remember our covid 19 Bloody Mary Zoom Calls. :) He was also the MOST handsome of all on our veterans day wall. They were special people and we miss them. Sending lots of love and very fond memories.
