Chester Kidd Obituary

Chester Walton Kidd, Jr.
'C.W.'
Mr. Kidd of Charlotte peacefully went home to be with our Lord, Saturday, May 15, 2004 at his home surrounded by his loving wife, Helen, and family. Born November, 7, 1924 to Chester W. and Bonnie Kidd Sr., he spent his lifetime serving his Lord, his family, his community, and his country. After graduating Long Creek High School in the 1940's, he married his high school sweetheart and worked at Southern Electric before proudly joining the Army Air Force's 8th Division in the 489th Bomb Group during WWII. He flew a B-24 Bomber over France and Germany completing 35 perilous missions. For this he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and eight Oakleaf Clusters. After returning home on Christmas Day, as he had promised Helen, he began what is now his legacy to his four children, nine grandchildren, and thirteen great grandchildren. He created the Rockin' K Ranch, their home on Miranda Rd. He prospered in business with his construction company, a general store, the Rockin' K Motel in North Myrtle Beach, the Mecklenburg Abattoir and other businesses, too many to list. His determination to help his community and family lead to various endeavors including serving as Sheriff of Mecklenburg County for twelve years. Mr. Kidd served his community through his church, Trinity United Methodist Church on Beatties Ford Rd, 'The greatest little church in America'. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, the Optimist Club, the Angel Tractor Club, and a variety of other charitable organizations. He spent his lifetime helping others in ways that may never be matched and couldn't possibly be duplicated. If a need was brought to him by anyone, he would find a way to provide.
He is survived by his wife, his lifetime love, Helen Frazier Kidd; his daughter and son-in-law, Vicki and Scott Tucker; his son Jerry Kidd, his son, Larry Kidd, and his son and daughter-in-law, Chester W. 'Buddy' and Lyndy Kidd; nine grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; and a lifetime of cherished friends.
Visitation will be at Trinity United Methodist Church Family Life Center on Beatties Ford Rd. from 7-9 PM on Monday, May 17th. The funeral will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church on Tuesday, May 18th at 2:00 PM. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Trinity United Methodist Church Family Life Center, 6230 Beatties Ford Rd, Charlotte, NC 28216.
Raymer Funeral Home in Huntersville, NC is serving the family.

CW KIDD WAS MY GRANDFATHER'S FRIEND. HE AND BUD BROWN KNEW ONE ANOTHER FROM THEIR ARMY AIR CORPS DAYS ABOARD B24'S. THEY WERE FRIENDS THROUGHOUT LIFE. CW WAS THE KIND OF MAN WHO EITHER LIKED YOU OR HE DIDN'T. HE WAS A KIND, AND WARM HEARTED MAN. WHEN MY GRANDFATHER DIED IN 1999 I GOT A CHANCE TO MEET CW. THROUGH HIS STORIES AND MEMORIES I WAS ABLE TO BETTER KNOW MY OWN GRANDFATHER AS A YOUNG MAN. I EVEN GOT THE CHANCE TO VISIT CW SEVERAL TIMES AT HIS HOME IN CHARLOTTE. HE WELCOMED MY BROTHER AND I LIKE CHERISHED FAMILY. WITH THE ADVISEMENT OF CW I WAS ABLE TO BECOME A POLICEMAN IN FLORIDA. I ROUTINELY CALLED HIM AND GAVE HIM UPDATES ON MY PROGRESS AND EXPERIENCES. I WILL SURELY MISS CW. I CAN ONLY HOPE THAT AS I GET OLDER I CAN BECOME HALF THE MAN HE WAS. I MISS YOU C. MY CONDOLENCES GO OUT TO YOUR FAMILY.

RESPECTFULLY,

WALTER

CW was an outstanding human being, dedicated to makeing life more enjoyable for others. He brought dignity to the sheriff's department, although sometimes he was a bit unconventional, his heart was always in the right place. The spirit and kindness that he and Helen exhibited for many decades made Mecklenburg a better community.

We shall miss him.

Aunt Helen, So many memories as a child attending rodeos, eating at the cabin, youth group meetings at the house, beach vacations at "Rest Haven". Calling work with the unbelievable story that I would be late because there were 15 bulls in the front yard of the trailer that I rented behind your house. Memories of Aunt Bernice,Uncle Lewis, Cary and her little duck she named "Coca Cola". The funny stories you and Uncle CW would tell me on Larry when he was little. Of course, woven within these stories and many more, are memories of you and Uncle CW. Thanks for the wonderful memories. Both you and Uncle CW all have become a part of so many lives and to me are considered a blessing in my own. Uncle CW will be greatly missed. Love, Pam

As a former law enforcement officer from Florida, I offer my deepest condolences to former Sheriff Kidd's family. It is always a deep sorrow to lose a member of the brotherhood/family; this is no exception, especially as it appears the man was innovative at a time when it was needed most.
