Dot Camp Obituary

Dot Camp CONCORD - Dot Camp's life of faith in action ended on September 8, 2014. Her example of service to community and friendship to others will continue to influence those who knew her. A native of the Ellerbe, NC area, Dot moved to Charlotte and built a career as a legal secretary where she met Lewis Camp Jr., who would become her husband of over 50 years. As they raised a family, Dot was active with Girl Scouts, at Steele Creek Presbyterian Church, and in the public school system. Dot's skill in cooking provided a focus for the Sunday lunches she hosted at "Camptown" for family and guests. An early advocate of integration, Dot invested time at public schools and effort in networking with local officials. For seven years she volunteered almost daily at Kennedy Junior High School. At Steele Creek Presbyterian, she created a Fun Bunch Lunch senior ministry, served as a deacon, and established and maintained a partnership with a sister church in Ashe County, NC. The ministry that Dot and Lewis found most compelling was a response to hunger. As chair of the Presbytery of Charlotte Hunger Action Committee, Dot spoke extensively in support of the "10 cents a meal" program, which raised millions to mitigate hunger. Dot and Lewis together worked tirelessly with several local hunger charities, including Loaves & Fishes and the Society of Saint Andrew Gleaning Network. Recognitions of their efforts included a Governor's Award, the Virginia Sampson Award, and the naming of a Loaves & Fishes truck in their honor. A warehouse at Friendship Trays was named for Dot and Lewis as a tribute to the large amounts of food they hauled for the hungry, along with other volunteers of the "Steele Creek Fleet". Dot and Lewis enjoyed extensive travels together, including many trips to New York City, London, continental Europe and as far afield as Australia. They delighted in their grandchildren, sharing afternoons, overnight trips and annual beach vacations. Dot travelled less often after Lewis' passing, but continued to enjoy outings and visits with granddaughters. She is survived by son Lewis Camp, III, and wife Crystal; daughter Ruth Hoffman and husband Jeff; daughter Lorraine Camp and husband Mike Ferguson; and daughter Jean Camp. Other survivors include grand-daughters Julia Hoffman, Amelia McDermott and Adonica Camp. She was preceded in death by husband Lewis F. Camp Jr. and granddaughter Elizabeth "Liz" Hoffman. Funeral services will be held at Plaza Presbyterian Church at 2304 The Plaza in Charlotte on Thursday, September 11, at 2pm. The family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Loaves & Fishes, Friendship Trays, Society of St. Andrews, or your local food bank. Online condolences may be left at www.whitleysfuneralhome.com.

Dot was so much fun! Every time she and Mr. Camp would run into my mom and dad, she'd try her best to get dad to go square dancing, to which he'd vigorously refuse! It was so funny to watch those two. The world is a better place for having known Dot. My prayers are with Lewis and the family.

Dot was one lovely person. A giver rather than a taker. She was a Christian in her heart, her person and every thing she did. Loved her family, church and friends. Fun to be with and a great cook, making the best peanut brittle in the world. She and Lewis were among the finest people in my life. The world is much richer for their lives. Libba and I adored them. We send the family our love and prayers. God bless. Steve Griffithu

Dot was the founder of "The Steele Creek Fleet." We always laughed that when a man turned 65, he bought a pick-up truck. ALL Dot's friends were over 65, so she made sure their trucks were filled with corn, tomatoes and peaches. She did more to fight hunger with her trucks than every committee meeting that was ever held.

Aunt Dot was one of the most wonderful influences in my life. She truly was my second mother, a friend, a teacher and so special to me. I will miss her terribly but I know she will still guide me when I need her. She is the only reason I was able to perfect my Pink Lemonade cake which was her favorite!!! Every time I make one I will think of her.
